AS Senate: Atheist debate and commuter party

Tijuana ministry members forced to stay home

Biola’s Tijuana Ministry cancelled their Nov. 22 trip to Tijuana due to increasing violence in Mexico, said Barbara Miller, director of spiritual life. In the 12 years of its existence, TJ, which travels to Tijuana four to five times a semester, has never cancelled a trip because of violence or danger, said Miller.

Corey unveils university plan

President Corey has recently submitted a new plan for Biola University that includes an emphasis on cross cultural work.
President Corey pushed for social justice and diversity initiatives in a six-point draft of the university plan he submitted to the board of trustees late last month. After affirming the initiatives, the various committees of the board have begun drafting specific plans to execute those goals, which will form the backbone of Biola’s long-term strategic plan, to be unveiled in the spring.

Is Biola eco-friendly?

Biola uses a central generator that supplies 80 percent of all the campus' energy and also produces its own hot water.
Recently, three Biola graduate students conducted a study of the Caf and grounds keeping to determine how much effort the school is putting into having a smaller impact on the environment. The students spoke with Biola faculty involved in each area to find facts about the school’s practices, along with suggestions to help students conserve resources.

What one man calls missions, another calls The Embarkment. Sophomore Joshua Watson is fulfilling his call to travel to Uganda to do what he can to meet the endless needs in the country. Tyler Madsen, creator of the company LoveNailTree, describes The Embarkment as “an embarking on an adventure to help people.”

Westmont fire prompts swift Biola response

Members of the Biola community took it upon themselves last week to organize response efforts to Westmont College, which was hit by the recent string of wildfires. Last Thursday night, wildfires broke out in the Montecito, Calif. area, which is nestled in the hills of Santa Barbara. Around 6 p.m. flames erupted just above Westmont.

AS is putting on an upper campus Christmas party that will reach over 1,000 students. The event will take place Dec. 5 on the walkway between Horton and Emerson, and will be open to all upper campus students.

The first performances of the year, directed by Katherine Zilka, is based on J.M. Barrie's Original Peter Pan or The Boy Who Would Not Grow Up, and specially adapted by Zilka. What would happen to Biola if “the big one” hit? Last week a team of Biola staff got a peek. Campus Safety, along with administrators all around campus, responded Thursday to a mock catastrophic earthquake that inflicted heavy damage and many injuries on Biola’s campus.

Five local bands – including “7 or Breakfast,” “Back on Track” and “Ordinary People” – brought down the house at the Rock for Justice benefit concert in Sutherland Auditorium Friday night. Organized by New Heart Community Church, Maharlika and the Social Justice Ministry, Rock for Justice served as a fundraiser for My Refuge House, a project of New Heart Community Church.
