Students studying abroad next year may have an extra $1,000 or more on their Biola bill due to a change in how Biola charges off-campus programs for room and board.

Instead of charging students who are studying abroad the equivalent of Hart Hall residency with a 10 meal plan, they will now be charged the equivalent of Horton Hall residency with a 20 meal plan, said Amy Agadoni, off-campus programs coordinator.

Room and board for off-campus programs, then, will cost $4,260 a semester, a $985 increase from last year.

Tuition for all undergraduates, including those studying abroad, will increase $660 a semester to $13,872.

A $2,000 fee is also added to BestSemester’s Scholars’ Semester in Oxford, the only program affected by “atypical” fees, Agadoni said.

“All in all, it’s a decision that the university had to make,” she said. “I think it’s important to see it [the opportunity to study abroad] as a novelty, as a privilege.”

Oxford financial aid, however, could mitigate this extra burden for many participating students, she said.
