Some 175 students left Chase Gymnasium with baccalaureate degrees Friday night after fall commencement ceremonies. Lee Strobel delivered the keynote address, telling the story of his pastor, Bill Hybels, and the humble beginnings of Willow Creek Community Church. A high school teacher had influenced Hybels to start a church, which ultimately became one of the largest evangelical congregations in America.

Outage: Failed transformer to be rebuilt; estimated cost is $35,000

A blown transformer caused the electrical panel failure that shut down power in Metzger Hall and cut off internet access this morning, according to Brian Phillips, director of facilities services. A backup generator arrived at 11:10 a.m., and by 1:25 p.m., students were notified via voicemail that the power had been restored.

Volleyball finishes third in U.S.

The Eagles’ volleyball team had its championship aspirations shattered on Friday, falling victim to No. 3-ranked Concordia in the semifinal round. The Eagles split the season series with Concordia, with each team protecting their home courts. With the loss, the Eagles fell to 31-4 on the season, still their best record in team history.

Violent political conflict in Jos, Nigeria has led the interterm mission team to postpone their trip until the summer. The eight remaining teams have raised their minimum funds and will be leaving as scheduled, said senior Adam Payton, president of SMU.

Christmas chapel rings in the season

Students sat enthralled by the Christmas melodies at the annual All-University Christmas Chapel, staged by the Conservatory of Music Wednesday. Pieces included “Joy to the World,” “Do You Hear What I Hear,” “Sweet Little Jesus Boy,” and others from the 53 chorale members, numerous brass instruments, 23 string instruments, eight members of The King's Men, and one piano.

Administration keeps eyes on enrollment numbers

Spring registration and next year’s enrollment numbers will be the first signs of how Biola is weathering the sluggish economy, say top Biola administrators. Biola’s heavy reliance on students’ tuition and room and board means that any change of enrollment significantly affects its budget.

Attendance has increased at recent chapels as remaining chapel credit opportunities this semester become fewer and fewer, said Jon Wyatt, chapel accountability manager. At least 1,000 students have attended each normal chapel in recent weeks, according to chapel accountability's records. That is compared with an average of 800 students per chapel at this time last year, Wyatt said.

Biola prepares for worst in shifty economy

In light of the recent national economic issues President Corey has made clear that Biola is not in a crisis, and the university is hurting no more than most other universities.
A hiring freeze is among several precautionary measures Biola will take in light of worsening economic conditions which have hurt the university’s endowment, said President Corey last week in letters to students, faculty and staff.
