Flu season is here. It’s in the air, it’s attacking your immune system and dragging you down. Sniffles, coughs and sneezes are joining together to create a sick tune to fill the lulls of classes. This is no tune to whistle to, so here is some advice on how to avoid getting the flu and steps to recovery if you have it.

First, a flu shot is always a good choice. They help keep the virus away, but they aren’t always available. If you are blessed enough to find one, take the opportunity to get one. The health center has had some recently, but they run out fast! Keep checking the front door to see if shots are in.

Make sure to see a doctor if you are starting to feel sick. Oftentimes, you may misdiagnose your own illnesses. The best thing to do is make a doctor’s appointment with the health center to check you out. Not to worry, Dr. Hawkins and the rest of the staff are gentle, nice, helpful and they truly care about your well being. They’d be happy to meet you and hopefully treat your illness.

Proper rest is also crucial. The immune system cannot fight illness off as well without sleep. Your body needs time to rejuvenate. Your body is capable of healing itself if it is allowed to get the rest it needs. Get some sleep because you will feel better and feel well rested and charged to fight off the flu.

Drinking lots of fluids such as water and Gatorade is also helpful. Water will flush any sickness out of your body and keep you hydrated and healthy.

Gatorade offers electrolytes and an enjoyable flavor to help you fight the fight of health. A proper diet is also very important. Stay away from fried foods, junk foods and sugary foods. Protein will give our body nutrients to build the immune system. If you crave sugar, eat some type of fruit so you are getting a healthy, natural sugar.

Vitamins, especially vitamin C, is also a healer for the body. You can buy pills that are pure vitamin C or powders are available to make a drink. These are sold at grocery stores such as Albertsons and CVS.

Lastly, it is important to keep your stress level down. Stress causes the immune system to weaken, making it hard for your body to fight off illnesses. Manage your time, get plenty of sleep and communicate well to avoid or manage stress.

The flu season is impossible to avoid, but let your flu season be flu free and healthy as can be.
