The Eagles entered into their three game series at Menlo College with a 3-6 record and took game one of the series 4-1. Their streak-snapping win against Menlo could not have come sooner for the Eagles since their series against the Oaks is Biola’s first Golden State Athletic Conference matchup of the season. Despite their sub-positive 4-6 season record, the Eagles are 1-0 in their conference matchups.

The Eagles have not faced Menlo College since 2011, but are scheduled to take the diamond against the Oaks six times this season.

The Oaks, who fought to maintain their undefeated record at home, struck first with first baseman Garrett Gemgnani’s home run in the bottom of the second inning off Eagles’ starting pitcher Eric Diomartich. Diomartich settled in and pitched 6.1 innings to allow one run, five hits and threw five strikeouts.

Down by one, the Eagles permanently took the lead in the top of the fourth inning with a RBI single from designated hitter Eugene Shin and a throwing error from the Oaks’ shortstop which allowed shortstop Alec Dewatteville from third.

Leading 2-1, the Eagles added to the scoreboard in the fifth and eighth inning, finishing the game on top of the Owls 4-1.

Diomartich earned his first win of the season and relief pitcher Buddy Brouwer, who pitched the last 2.2 innings with one hit and three strikeouts, received his first save.

The majority of the Eagles offense came from their middle infielders. Second baseman JD Meyer fueled the Eagles offense, going 3-4 with one run. On top of that, Dewatteville was 2-4 scoring one run.

The Eagles will wrap up their three-game set with a double header at Menlo College on Feb. 13 at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.
