Following the 15-5 blowout loss against The Master’s College Mustangs on Friday afternoon, Biola’s baseball team went back for a doubleheader on Saturday, playing at 11 a.m. and 2 pm. While both games resulted in losses for the Eagles, both games were closer than Friday, with the first game ending 5-2, and the second 3-2. These losses move Biola’s season record to 3-5 and their GSAC record to 1-5.

The Mustangs started out all three games with at least one run in the first inning, but Biola held them to only one run in the first inning of both games on Saturday, conceding five first-inning runs on Friday.

In the first game on Saturday, Biola improved from Friday, only allowing six hits all game. Unfortunately, five of those six translated to runs for Master’s, four of which came in the third inning. At the top of the fourth, Master’s led 5-0, a number that proved too much for Biola to overcome. The Eagles were able to score two runs, one in the fourth and one in the eighth to bring the score to 5-2, but were unable to pull out the victory.

Biola tied Master’s in terms of total hits but could not translate them into runs. Junior Julian Jarrard and sophomore Jeremy Barth each got an RBI in the losing effort from the Eagles.

Biola came closest to winning in the second game of the day. The final score ended up 3-2. Master’s got out to an early lead in the first inning with one scored run. Biola then scored a run in the third inning and another in the fifth, giving them their first lead over Master’s in any of the three games. Master’s scored a tying run in the sixth then the go-ahead run in the bottom eighth. Biola could not garner up another run, walking away with a heartbreaking loss.

Jarrard came up big for the Eagles again with an RBI as well as freshman Rawley Hughes. Biola got seven runs off of freshman pitcher David Carpenter but then did not earn one from his relief sophomore Aaron Alexander. Although Biola overpowered Master’s in hits, Master’s came away victorious.

The Eagles next game is the first of another three-game series against Concordia at 2 p.m. Feb. 6 at Eagles Diamond.
