Women’s basketball team earns victory over Hope International University

Eagles say “Aloha” to new season

With a team ranked above any other GSAC school, including that of Azusa Pacific, the Biola baseball season has plans for a competitive conference trip to Hawaii to start off the year.  Photo by Mike Villa
After hosting Chapman on Thursday the Eagles kick-off the season with a week-long, competitive trip to Hawaii. Normally a pre-season rank of fourth in the nation would be enough, but it is just the beginning for the 2009 Biola baseball squad who have their sights set on a trip to Lewiston, Idaho for the first time in four years with a roster filled with All-Conference talent.

The Biola womens’ basketball team’s incredible season was dealt a setback on Saturday night when Cal Baptist upset the Lady Eagles by a score of 74-65 at Chase Gymnasium. However, the Eagles have enjoyed remarkable success this season, working their way to a 12-5 overall record and a 5-4 GSAC record.

The wins against ranked opponents continue to pile up for the men’s basketball team. They recorded their third victory over a top-25 opponent in the last two weeks, knocking off preseason NAIA No. 1 Cal Baptist by a final score of 67-64 on Saturday night at Chase Gymnasium.

At Biola, weather and traffic are not as big of issues in attending games as class schedules and church commitments are. Of course it is different for Biola students, who often support other local college teams such as UCLA basketball or USC football, while also occasionally attending games in La Mirada.

Basketball season has begun, and both Biola teams have started off well. The Eagles traveled north over the weekend, kicking off the regular season with a 67-53 win at Holy Names University.

Deciphering the rankings

National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics is one of the many different rankings for college level sports teams based on a team’s past performance and future prospects.
The rankings of each school differ depending on each sport. Every year, coaches do a preseason poll to come up with an official NAIA ranking based on a team’s past performance and prospects for the future.

The Lady Eagles finished off their season with a 5-set thriller in Riverside over the weekend, holding off a determined Cal Baptist squad who fought back from an early two-set deficit to force the fifth game.

Men and women’s cross country push toward nationals

The Eagles cross country team is ranked eighth nationally and hope to earn a spot in the upcoming nationals competition.
Biola women cross country's outstanding 5k race placed them third overall, just overtaking fourth-ranked Concordia by 10 points. The men accomplished their best 8k time of the year, placing them sixth right behind the number five ranked Westmont.

Men’s soccer takes down San Diego Christian, women finish with hopes for next year

Biola men’s soccer Saturday night, Oct. 4, won their first conference against league rivals Point Loma Nazarene University,.
Saturday, the Biola Eagles men’s soccer team took the field against the San Diego Christian College Hawks. The Eagles, who were fighting for a place in the GSAC playoffs, won the game 2-0. The women’s team also took the field Saturday against San Diego Christian College. The women were not in contention for a playoff spot, but look to capping off a year filled with improvements on last season and have hopes for the next.
