Dance Dance Revolution

The newest piece by The Chimes humor columnist, Zach Newcott
Of all the things Biola University has made me give up for the sake of their student contract (cat juggling) dancing was certainly one I thought I would miss. It's taken me this long to accept their online censorship program, Websense, as a common daily occurrence, I just assumed that in time my need to dance would ebb away. It was hard for me to find out that my kind of dancing, which includes lots of shaking and repeatedly pointing towards a specific body part, simply isn't appropriate for this atmosphere. Oh, I'm sorry Biola, I thought this was America.

Paul Harvey and My Grandpa: Finding peace in the midst of death

On Saturday, in Phoenix, Ariz., Paul Harvey, the long time radio host passed away. He was 90 years old. Harvey happened to be the “most listened to radio personality in America,” according to an ABC press release issued shortly after his death. Even though the world mourns the loss of a great man, just as my family mourns my grandpa’s death, there is a peace in knowing where they are now.

Escapism in movies

From “Saving Private Ryan” to “It’s a Wonderful Life,” Hollywood screenwriters are infamous for crafting either shockingly depressive or ridiculously optimistic endings, oscillating from one extreme to the other.

The “real world” isn’t on CNN

Betcha you never thought you’d hear this question from a journalism student: Does keeping up with news make us any better? I mean, really, does it make us better people?

Gambling with the future

My roommate Micah is what I like to call a multitasker. In my world, that means he’s capable of playing not just one, but two videogames at the same time. In this case, one of them is an outer space role-playing game, while the other is online poker.

A Mary Christmas

*“There has fallen on earth for a token, a god too great for the sky.” – G.K. Chesterton* There once were two sisters, you’ve most likely heard of them. Stop thinking about tomorrow and wake up today

I tie my scarf tighter and shiver in the frigid air conditioning at Starbucks. Maybe a sip of steaming coffee will warm me. I lift the cardboard cup the chessboard table in front of my MacBook. After a swallow of hot liquid, I return my focus to the book in my hands.

Finding an outlet for the inner turmoil

Four years ago when I was a freshman, I can remember opening my eyes in the morning and not knowing why I even bothered waking up. My grandfather had recently passed away and my parents had just gotten divorced; the world I once knew had been turned completely upside down. I would go to chapel by myself and sit alone not caring to talk to anyone. That was how I spent my first couple of years at Biola.

Life in America: Black Friday and my new Wii pajamas

Ever since the day Squanto gave the first Pilgrims such a great deal on corn, Black Friday has become a part of American history. Each year, thousands of men and women flock to the stores the day after Thanksgiving to take part in this wonderful tradition passed down from generation to generation. It is for this very reason that I woke up at 4:00 a.m. last Friday to stand in line at my nearest Target.

Four fires in an inverted world

The ash falls gently like snowflakes, covering the ground at my feet with a blanket of grey. This blanket consists of a mother’s rocking chair, an accountant’s business, a boy’s favorite backyard tree, the newlyweds’ first home, a traveler’s hotel room, and the portraits on the mantel in a grandma’s house.

Becoming a good steward

If we knew that one day we would give account for what we did with our resources, would that change the way we use them? Would that make us rethink how we spend our money?
