What would happen to Biola if “the big one” hit? Last week a team of Biola staff got a peek. Campus Safety, along with administrators all around campus, responded Thursday to a mock catastrophic earthquake that inflicted heavy damage and many injuries on Biola’s campus.

Benefit concert raises awareness for social justice

Five local bands – including “7 or Breakfast,” “Back on Track” and “Ordinary People” – brought down the house at the Rock for Justice benefit concert in Sutherland Auditorium Friday night. Organized by New Heart Community Church, Maharlika and the Social Justice Ministry, Rock for Justice served as a fundraiser for My Refuge House, a project of New Heart Community Church.

Local blazes darken sky, shut freeways (Video)

The sky turned orange and the air thickened Saturday as smoke and ash from fires burning in as close as Brea blanketed the campus and the greater Los Angeles area. Fast-moving winds and temperatures in the 90s spurred on earlier fires burning north of Los Angeles in Montecito and Sylmar, and started fires east of Biola in Yorba Linda, Anaheim Hills and Corona.

Firefighters race to stop blaze before winds erupt

MONTECITO, Calif. (AP) _ Firefighters struggled to get control of a raging wildfire Friday that destroyed more than 100 homes and injured 13 people in this Mediterranean-style coastal town that has been home to celebrities from Charlie Chaplin to Oprah Winfrey.

“Radio Jesus” to speak at chapel

A man who impersonates Jesus on the radio will speak tomorrow at chapel on how Jesus would argue. Neil Saavedra, who prefers to refer to himself as the producer of his “Jesus Christ Show” on Los Angeles’ KFI-640 AM rather than the host (though he really is both), will be the concluding speaker of the Defending the Faith chapel series, sponsored by the Christian apologetics department.

“Why Biola Rocks” takes first place

Sophomores Colin Cabalka and Adeboye “Boye” Fajinmi just won a trip to Jamaica. If that doesn’t suit them, the Biola cinema and media arts majors can choose to head to Acapulco, Cancun, or the Bahamas for their spring break, and do it without spending a dime. That’s because their “Why Biola Rocks” video won the grand prize in a U.S. News & World Report video contest, “Why My School Rocks!” on Nov. 3.

UCLA defeats Biola in exhibition game

As the expression goes, UCLA basketball “does not rebuild, they reload.” And the 2008-09 season will be no different as the Bruins have the number one incoming class in the nation according to multiple scouting services and national web sites. Biola jumped at the opportunity to play against the No. 4 ranked Bruins at the legendary Pauley Pavilion Friday, losing the exhibition 76-42.

Proposition 8 initiates street opposition (Video)

Local residents have been protesting their stance on election issues this year, gathering together on the streets in order to gain supporters of their positions. On Nov. 2, people from opposing sides of Proposition 8, one of the most highly contested props on this year's ballot, stood along the intersection of Beach Boulevard and Imperial Highway to speak for their views on the issue of same sex marriage in California.
