Christmas chapel rings in the season

Students sat enthralled by the Christmas melodies at the annual All-University Christmas Chapel, staged by the Conservatory of Music Wednesday. Pieces included “Joy to the World,” “Do You Hear What I Hear,” “Sweet Little Jesus Boy,” and others from the 53 chorale members, numerous brass instruments, 23 string instruments, eight members of The King's Men, and one piano.

Spring registration and next year’s enrollment numbers will be the first signs of how Biola is weathering the sluggish economy, say top Biola administrators. Biola’s heavy reliance on students’ tuition and room and board means that any change of enrollment significantly affects its budget.

Chapel attendance spikes as semester approaches end

Attendance has increased at recent chapels as remaining chapel credit opportunities this semester become fewer and fewer, said Jon Wyatt, chapel accountability manager. At least 1,000 students have attended each normal chapel in recent weeks, according to chapel accountability's records. That is compared with an average of 800 students per chapel at this time last year, Wyatt said.

Christmas tree lighting ushers in the holiday season with snowfall, carols (Video)

The annual community Christmas Tree Lighting was an even greater event than the last with a pre-show by the Biola Chorale, a performance by The King's Men, reading by Todd Pickett, Anders, Ella, and Sam Corey, and a countdown by Steve Jones, a La Mirada councilmember. Tijuana ministry members forced to stay home

Biola’s Tijuana Ministry cancelled their Nov. 22 trip to Tijuana due to increasing violence in Mexico, said Barbara Miller, director of spiritual life. In the 12 years of its existence, TJ, which travels to Tijuana four to five times a semester, has never cancelled a trip because of violence or danger, said Miller.

Corey unveils university plan

President Corey pushed for social justice and diversity initiatives in a six-point draft of the university plan he submitted to the board of trustees late last month. After affirming the initiatives, the various committees of the board have begun drafting specific plans to execute those goals, which will form the backbone of Biola’s long-term strategic plan, to be unveiled in the spring.
