Malcolm Todd’s debut album, “Malcolm Todd,” was released earlier this month on April 4, after an exciting month of teasers including the release of his highly anticipated single, “Bleed,” featuring Omar Apollo. While many fans, including plenty here at Biola, have come to know him through his 2024 breakout project “Sweet Boy,” this new album marks his official studio debut. Todd stays true to his unique style, blending groovy guitar and dreamy synths to create something new in the indie pop music scene.
In his past album, “Sweet Boy,” nearly every track was memorable. While “Malcolm Todd” as a whole doesn’t necessarily hit the same mark, the album holds some of his most popular works, like “Chest Pain (I Love),” and “Bleed,” as well as new, stand-out tracks like “Concrete,” “Make Me a Better Man” and “Lying.” The album as a whole feels a bit less interesting than his earlier works, but still has some charm and strong emotion embedded to carry the record. Each track is a true testament to Todd’s talent, but is it enough to press replay on the album? It’s questionable.
