M83’s double album “Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming” is everything you’ve ever wanted with its emotional melodies and howling vocals; it is an experience in and of itself. The sixth album from the French shoegaze band led by Anthony Gonzalez, released on Oct. 18, has been well received by many. After moving from France to Los Angeles, frequent trips to Joshua Tree National Park and touring with The Killers, Depeche Mode and Kings of Leon, Gonzalez was inspired to create the new album.

Draws listeners into the music

The first song “Intro,” which features Zola Jesus, is something that paints a mental image while you listen to it. With the sounds of the first synths, you feel as if you are being transported into another world. The first lyrics are whispers in the beginning of the song, “We didn’t need a story / We didn’t need a real world / We just had to keep walking / And we became the stories / we became the places / We were the lights, the deserts, the faraway worlds / We were you before you even existed.”

Right from the start the album makes it clear that listening will be a unique and personal experience. You feel a connection to the music when you listen to it because it is so moving, this establishes a personal relationship with the music that holds strong throughout the album. The second song off of the album, “Midnight City,” is a bit more dance-y and moody. Taking cues from the ’80s, it makes you want to dance freely and unload all of your emotions onto the black asphalt of the city streets. The saxophone at the end of the song adds a nice juxtaposition to the beats and synths. The next song, “Reunion,” has an undeniable ode to the ’80s classic “Don’t You,” by Simple Minds, made famous by the ending scene to John Hughes’ film “The Breakfast Club.” Other stand out tracks on the album are “Wait,” “Raconte-Moi Une Histoire,” “OK Pal” and “Splendor.”

Meaningful interludes

While most interludes on albums have no importance, the instrumental interludes on this album hold as much weight as the lyrics. The instrumentals are beautiful and well composed. They are heavy and evoke emotion that helps push the album forward.

Never a dull moment

The album’s concept seems to have been well thought out with a fully developed ’80s mystical vibe. The production of the album is extremely strong as well, but what stands out about M83’s abilities is that it was executed so well. “Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming” is brilliant and almost serves as a soundtrack to the ups and downs everyone experiences throughout life. There is raw emotion and vulnerability that is present and felt when you listen to the album, which feeds into its authenticity.

The most impressive quality of the album is that it never bores. It leaves you feeling fulfilled and inspired by the end of it. Its solidarity and cohesiveness is shown all around from the instrumentals to the vocals to the lyrics. It is clear that it has drawn inspiration from the past and made it relevant to our world now. The album takes you on a journey through M83’s world, a journey that you’ll never want to end.
