Foregoing fitting in

At the beginning of the semester, I feel like this is my first time at Biola, for the sixth time. This place is strangely familiar, yet so far from what I call home.

Obama sending mixed messages

The Democratic National Convention was just a of couple weeks ago, and the senator from my home state of Illinois, Barack Obama, made American history by just standing and talking at the podium. Although Obama is a great orator — something the White House has been missing for at least eight years — I think many people have become distracted by his rhetoric and forget to analyze what is, exactly, the message that he wants to get across.

Fruitlessly planning the future

Who am I to arrogantly declare my future? And yet, I find that we often speak of the future as if it is guaranteed.

Christian toilet paper and television

September 9, 2008

Written by Calvin Sodestrom I love to walk into Christian bookstores and see how far the Christian subculture has truly gone. The vast array of things I can buy with either our Savior’s name or face imprinted on them is amazing. I’m all for selling Christian books and little trinkets here...

A day at the doctor

September 9, 2008

Written by Nathan Howden Is it serious? I'm afraid it is. Am I gonna die? Well son, death is gonna catch up to all one day, but yours is coming quicker than ours, than ours. That quote has nothing to do with this post; I just really like the song. I went to the doctor today to get a...

Show me the money!

September 4, 2008

Written by The Chimes Staff L.A. is one of the most diverse, opportunity-rich cities in the country. The benefits go beyond proximity to Disneyland and the beach – there are world-class corporations for graduates of virtually any major. It’s a prime spot for Biola. But then there’s the downside....

The hand that rocks the world rules the cradle

May 9, 2008

Everyone’s heard the adage “The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world.” It’s sentimental, poignant and tender. This Sunday being Mother’s Day, it’s even appropriate. But two unexpected phone calls, two situations, two years apart, shifted my focus to different hands. Monday morning...

Cost of Missions

May 9, 2008

Go and make disciples of all nations, no matter how many T-shirts you have to sell. Ok, so Jesus didn’t really say that (that’s why I didn’t use quotation marks), but if you have gone to the Cafe in the past month or walked by the fountain or stopped into Commons, you have probably seen a T-shirt...

Mom’s Day

May 9, 2008

In honor of this coming Sunday I decided to write a column on Mother’s Day. And I couldn’t think of a more appropriate way to write about Mother’s Day than by using the same technique that I use in celebrating it: specifically calling my sister and asking what I should do. My sister and I have...

Accepting the fact that I’m about to graduate

May 9, 2008

Well, I’ve done it. On May 24, 2008, I will officially welcome myself into American society and step out of the world of academia. I will be a college graduate. If I could get through life on the coattails of academics I would be a happy person. Academics are something I am great at. I don’t mean...

Prices Soar – But Is it really that bad?

April 2, 2008

Ben Franklin said death and taxes were the only two certainties. He never owned a car. I’d propose that we amend Mr. Franklin’s list to include “complaining about gas prices.” While prices of most commodities continually grow, nothing seems to draw as much fury as prices at the...
