Biola University has appointed Randy Chung as its new Chief of Campus Safety, effective Jan. 23rd, 2026. Having served as the interim chief for five months following the passing of former Chief of Campus Safety John Ojeisekhoba, Chung steps into his new role after 18 years of service to the university.
Born and raised in Southern California, Chung first joined Biola’s Campus Safety team back in 2008. He completed his undergraduate degree in criminal justice from Cal State University, Fullerton and a year later applied for a position at Biola.
“I finished my undergrad the year prior,” said Chung, “and heard about an open Campus Safety Officer position from a family member who had ties to Biola. So I called the office, came over, and did a ride-along with one of the officers back then. I really liked what I saw and threw in my application. The position closed the day after, so I got it in right at the 11th hour, and the rest is history. Here I am, about 18 years later, as Chief of Campus Safety.”
During his time at Biola, Chung explains how campus safety has evolved over the years to meet the needs of the community.
“We are always trying to kind of stay current and just adapt to the ever-changing needs of the Biola community,” said Chung. “The biggest change for me is that I need to be more cognizant now of how my decisions would impact the department and in certain aspects of the university as well.”
For Chung, campus safety is much more than just enforcement and emergency response. Rooted in empathy and respect, he emphasizes the importance of relationship building with the community. He explains how his philosophy has been shaped by not only his years of experience but also by working with others, including students and visitors.
Looking ahead, Chung explained how one of his main goals is to continue the work Ojeisekhoba started while also focusing on internal growth for the department.
“One of the main goals is to complete the goals that Chief O had set for the department prior to his passing last September. Beyond that is just to really focus on building our team because of this transition. We have people in new positions, and definitely want to pour into them and just make sure they’re more confident than they ever have been.”
As Chung steps into the role of Chief of Campus Safety, he reiterates that his goal is not to imitate his predecessor, but to honor his legacy while making his own path.
“Chief O is Chief O; no one can fill those shoes,” Chung said. “That’s not my goal. I’m a different person, and I have my own shoes to fill here in this role now. Having been under his leadership for nearly two decades, his influence is definitely going to be seen moving forward.”
When asked about President Corey’s decision to appoint him, Chung explained how he was quite honored and surprised to have been chosen for the position. He was also humbled to see how these numerous years of work have paid off. President Corey was asked about his decision in choosing Chung:
“Chief Randy Chung is deeply aligned with Biola’s biblical mission and values,” says Corey, “ and he understands that a safe campus is foundational to the hospitable, God-centered environment we seek to provide.”
Chung doesn’t regret the time put into serving Biola’s community. Even after 18 years, Chung’s motivation remains rooted in his service to the Biola community.
“The grass is greener where you water it,” said Chung. “I’m excited to invest in this community and see what grows from it.”
