Mock Rock, Biola’s annual lip-syncing dance contest, is just around the corner and participants are bringing their A-game to win the competition. The event seeks to create a community among students and bring the campus together.
With various teams competing to take home the gold, some begin practicing as early as the summer. Others, on the other hand, begin later as a spur-of-the-moment decision. Nevertheless, competitors put in their time, treasure and talents for their teams.
“I am most excited to change Mock Rock culture,” said junior Bible theology major and leader for Hawt Pocketz, David Fung.
“Our team is the firefighters fighting against the Mock Rock blaze. Our team started from scratch, which allowed us to build the team as we wanted it: fun, low-commitment, and dedicated to offering the Mock Rock experience to everyone,” said Fung.
Students and staff have a lot to look forward to. Teams dress up to tell a story, some with original stories and others inspired by the media, culminating in an entertaining event for people of all ages.
“Be excited for a team that has created a unique story from scratch. We have a team that has been working hard, despite being small and having other commitments,” Fung said. “We’ve really pulled together to represent all of Biola and create something special. Oh, and we have a couple of guest faculty members!”
The teams competing and their main leaders are as follows:
Heroes: Janie Colver and Faith Derkenne
Men of Honor: Cameron Bleeker, Zeke Paquette and Katrina Stump
Bropoc: Tommy Reed and Abigail Jackson
Encore: Makayla Ward, Lote Vunibaka, Tori Johnson and Michaiah Bautista
Hawt Poketz: David Fung
Mock Rock will take place in Chase Gymnasium on April 12 at 7 p.m. The event is free for all and does not require tickets.
