Women’s tennis picks up second straight win

The Eagles were back in action at home for the second consecutive day, taking on Lewis-Clark [ID] State College Tuesday. After losing the doubles point and the first singles match, the Eagles rattled off four straight wins to earn the 4-2 victory.

At No.1 doubles, junior Lauren Lee and sophomore Esther Lee picked up a quick 6-1 win to start the day. However, the Warriors responded by defeating junior Allison Torres and freshman Ines Diaz 6-3. LCC earned the doubles point with a 6-4 win over sophomores Sarah Morgan and Lily Waterhouse.

“I think this is the first time we lost the doubles point and actually won the match. We just competed so hard in the singles,” said head coach David Goodman.

Esther Lee was forced to retire in the first set on the No. 1 court due to injury, and things seemed bleak for Biola. However, the Eagles showed the same fight they have been known for all year, starting with a 6-3, 6-2 win from Torres on the No. 6 court.

Lauren Lee followed that up with a dominant 6-2, 6-1 win on court 5. Diaz then pushed the Eagles to the brink of a win with a big 6-3, 6-2 victory on the No. 2 court. Sophomore Madison Swaney clinched the win for the Eagles on the No. 4 court as she battled to a 6-3, 6-2 win, her first singles victory of the season. Waterhouse was leading 2-1 in the third set before her match was stopped.

“It feels so great, especially [after] being injured for the whole part of the first season. Now being able to be a part and contribute feels really good,” Swaney said.

The win pulls Biola back to .500 at 7-7, and will travel to take on Saint Katherine University on Friday at 3:30 p.m.

[email protected] Growing up in the small city of Santa Maria, California as the youngest of four boys, I was always surrounded by things much earlier than normal, due to the fact that I experienced things through my much older brothers. One of the things I experienced was sports, and when I started watching and seeing what it looked like to be on a sports team, I fell in love. In my family, sports is not really an option, it just is something that we all do. Luckily my parents never had to force me or my brothers to play sports because we all had a passion for it. From a young age I immersed myself in the culture of sports, watching any sport that was on, growing a particular liking to college football. My uncle attended the University of Notre Dame, and my whole family are die-hard Irish fans. Naturally I became one as well, and I remember Saturday mornings with the family quite clearly. As I grew older I began to see and understand more about what it took to broadcast a live sports game, and I became quite intrigued by it. I decided I wanted to be involved with sports for the rest of my life and cover it in some form. One of the sports commentators I look up to greatly and have always liked is NBC sports reporter Bob Costas, who is a jack of all trades broadcaster and covers all sports from the Olympics to football and many more. I aspire to be a broadcast journalist someday, and the Chimes is an excellent way to hone my skills and continue to practice writing and talking about sports. I look forward to my growth while working with the Chimes in reporting accurately and quickly, and cannot wait to cover Biola sports.
