AS senators heard three new proposals for requested funds this week.

AS senators approved all three of last week’s pending proposals and heard three new proposals which requested funds for Sola Soul, intramurals and Emerson Hall’s all-dorm event.

  • Junior Nancy Davong, multi-cultural relations chair, proposed to increase the event budget of $3,000 for Sola Soul, an annual Christian hip-hop event, to $4,800. The money, if approved, will go toward the performing artists’ fund, with the aim of quality over quantity, and of supporting local artists.
  • Junior Luke Hamagiwa, intramural board chair, requested $500 to pay for an additional scoreboard for intramural games. Hamagiwa cited that the current scoreboard has only been working properly on an intermittent basis. If approved, the new scoreboard would benefit the approximately 1,800 students who participate in intramurals.
  • Junior Christopher Yim, Emerson senator, requested $300 for the annual Mt. Emerson event, a camping trip taking place next week open to all Emerson residents. The Mt. Emerson expenses total $450 and approving the $300 would mean residents do not have to pay, excluding gas. That way, the majority of Emerson Hall’s annual $950 budget from Residence Life may be saved for all-hall meetings and dorm life. Yim emphasized the fact that an even smaller amount of money would help reduce the cost of the trip.
  • Senators passed a proposal from last week’s Sept. 13 meeting, allowing $300 from AS contingency to go towards chapel payroll. AS previously promised $7,372 to Chapel Programs but had only approved $7,072 last semester, and the $300 will balance the owed funds. The motion passed with a unanimous vote.
  • The senate debated whether to pass a pending Sept. 13 proposal of $3,000 for Biola Live, a service that procures and sells discounted tickets for off-campus sports and entertainment events to students. Junior Michael Ottenad, Hart senator, said some residents felt that contingency money should go to students first before distributing the $3,000 to Biola Live. However, senators said most of the feedback they had received was positive and they agreed that not passing the proposal would result in Biola Live being discontinued. The proposal was approved for the full amount by majority vote.
  • The last pending proposal from Sept. 13 for an increase of $1,500 in the Punk ‘N’ Pie budget was also passed by majority vote. The additional funds will go toward paying for the Punk ‘N’ Pie stage. Due to a low budget for stage construction, last year’s stage suffered a power outage in the middle of the event. Senators thought it was important to approve the requested funding so that safety will not be an issue this year. Sophomore Beatriz Delgadillo, Alpha East senator, said students shouldn’t be worrying about what is happening next.
  • Senators discussed resident feedback on last week’s Clubs Fair and the annual, campus-wide Nationball event. Senators noted that the overall advertising for the date and time could have been more effective but most students seemed pleased with the rented cotton candy machine. Senators also discussed Nationball’s new structure and, based on student feedback, asked if using a few residents to represent their dorm in the semi-final round, rather than the whole dorm, was necessary. Additionally, most senators thought the mini games could have been much shorter.
