Monday morning at chapel, President Corey announced his long awaited decision regarding the debated on-campus dancing rule.

In the future, allowing dancing at the Spring Banquet will be reconsidered because it is be an off-campus event, Corey said. Corey believes the on-campus dancing issue will rise again at some point.

“My decision has not been reached on a whim,” Corey said. “In the final assessment I have decided, at least for now, that the dance policy is not going to change. My decision not to change the policy was reached by the careful and cumulative consideration of many voices.”

One or two cheers echoed in the almost-silent auditorium, which then erupted into laughter to break the silence. Corey smiled and went on to explain how much thought went into his decision as he talked to many different people and prayed constantly.

“We want Biola to be a unified, Christ-honoring, loving place that makes a difference in the world, which at times means being different by saying ‘no’ to some things that many say ‘yes’ to and committing to community standards that aren’t always individual standards. As one who doesn’t believe that dancing is inherently wrong, I have made this decision to retain our current policy for on-campus dancing because I want Biola to still stand out as a place where, on some issues, we’re willing to walk a different path,” he said.

“Since dancing is such a subjective matter and many people have a different opinion, it’s probably best that Biola keeps high standards that keep us living above reproach,” said freshman Lindsay Snow, “I’m fine with the policy remaining the same.”

“The core of Biola –– and I mean this with of all of my heart –– is not of the things that we can’t do, but who we can be as a community,” Corey concluded.
