On March 14 at 7:30 p.m. in the Green Art Gallery, Biola Theater presents Mermaid, an adaptation of the original “Little Mermaid” tale by Hans Christian Anderson. The play, written by Polly Teale, explores the coming-of-age of Blue, who explores her identity through an imaginary character, the Little Mermaid.
“The Little Mermaid wants to explore the world above,” said senior theater major Jesenya Rivera-Puls. “She lives among men after trading her voice for legs and learns what it means to be human, the ugliness of it and the beauty.”
The play features senior liberal studies elementary education major Brianna Hudson as Blue and theater major Faith Peponis as the Little Mermaid. Puls plays the part of Mermaid One, one of the Little Mermaid’s sisters. As a participant in a heavy ensemble piece, she also plays a lady in waiting and a reporter.
Attendees should note that the production will include depictions of eating disorders, war, violence and death alongside flashing lights and loud sounds throughout the play. Tickets can be purchased here.
