During the course of Friday and Saturday, Jan. 13 and 14, Biola played in three games in a mini tournament against Arizona State University. On Friday, the Eagles lost 14-0 against the University of Michigan, then fell 16-10 against California Baptist later that day. The final game on Saturday was against Arizona State, who overwhelmed the Eagles in a 16-7 rout.

BIOLA STRUGGLES EARLY IN SEASON

Women’s water polo has not started the season the way they would have liked to, dropping all three of their first games — each of these three opponents, however, were NCAA Division I teams. This early season trial humbled the Eagles but has not defined the season.

Arizona State controlled the game from the start as the Sun Devils opened the game 6-2, which then grew to an 11-4 halftime lead. The Sun Devils eventually cruised to a 16-7 victory over the Eagles following a dominant performance.

A bright spot for the Eagles included junior utility Maria Roldan Gonzalez scoring multiple goals for the second game in a row. In addition, redshirt sophomore utility Marija Mijuskovic scored her first goal ever as an Eagle.

Up next, Biola will enter the Long Beach State Mini Tournament where they aim to get back on track. This event will take place on Saturday, Jan. 21 at 9:15 a.m. Stats from the match can be found on the Biola Athletics website.

Ryan Wingert is a senior political science major who loves sports, writing and being with friends. I was born in Sioux City, Iowa and lived there until I was five years old. Then in 2005, my dad’s job took my family out here to southern California. After I graduated high school in 2018, I went to community college. I then transferred here to Biola in the midst of the COVID pandemic in 2020.  I love sports, both playing and watching. Basketball, baseball and American football are my favorite sports. I am so excited to be with the Chimes where I get to watch Biola sporting events and write about them! My teams are the Cleveland Cavaliers, Denver Broncos, and the Anaheim Angels. They haven’t been great lately, but my love for the games have pushed me to continue watching them in their abysmal years!  Growing up, I have always loved writing. It was always my favorite part of school through primary school. My future is very unknown, but while I am looking into becoming a lawyer one day, becoming a writer would be an amazing job as well!
