Sometimes the darkness reveals light. There are always people who rise to the occasion of fending off evil. During World War II, Winston Churchill became a beacon of hope for millions in England and across Europe. When racial injustices intensified during the 1960s, Martin Luther King Jr. inspired a generation of Americans to fight for equality. When it was time to fight for freedom against England’s tyrannical rule, George Washington stepped up to lead the colonies into a new era.

Today, Europe is under the dark cloud of war once again. When Russia invaded Ukraine in February, the world was stunned. In the midst of the chaos and fear, the 44-year-old president of Ukraine posted a rebellious and inspirational selfie video to tell the world that his nation would not succumb to Russia.

Zelenskyy inspired not only Ukraine, but the entire world. According to the Pew Research Center, 7 of 10 Americans approve of Zelenskyy’s work thus far. Young people are especially drawn to his modern day stance against evil. Zelenskyy leads Ukraine with brilliant leadership qualities that young adults can mimic as they mature as leaders.

COURAGE AND TENACITY

Bravery is an attribute that all people aspire to have. Zelenskyy addressed his nation in early April and encouraged Ukraine to remain steadfast in their courage to win the war.

We have always been brave. The bravest in the world. I am sure of that,” Zelenskyy said. “Because who else would do what Ukrainians do?”

Not only did address the nation with valor, but Zelenskyy reminded Ukrainian citizens of their courage. He sparked hope among the Ukrainian people—empowering them to persevere. “In fact, this is our brand,” Zelesnkyy said. “This is what it means to be us. To be Ukrainians. To be brave.”

Zelenskyy said he would not hide from the Russians—rather remain boldly in the nation’s capital.

“Now I will say one thing: I stay here. I stay in Kyiv. On Bankova Street. I’m not hiding,” Zelenskyy said. “And I’m not afraid of anyone.”

The president exhibits boldness in his statement and placement that gives hope to the 10 million Ukrainians who were forced to flee their homes.

CALM AND PEACEFUL

Throughout the war, Zelenskyy has maintained an ambiance of being unfazed and calm in his leadership of Ukraine. He continually addressed the nation in a competent manner. NBC News writes that his calm tone during the early days of the war made way for a more serious attitude. This calmness reveals his ability to make appropriate decisions and maintain order in leadership.

Along with his calm demeanor, Zelenskky relentlessly pursues peace. He explained that even though no one wants to make a deal with someone like Putin, he would do whatever is necessary to end the war and create peace for Ukraine, Al Jazeera reports.

COMMUNICATION AND CHARISMA

Zelenskyy is often hailed as a modern day Churchill. The Associated Press reports that his clear communication and connection to the people of Ukraine has made all the difference in his success thus far. While Churchill maintained more eloquence and poetry in his approach, Zelenskyy evokes a more candid and direct style when addressing his nation—an approach that has gained him popularity among the young generation, AP reports.

Young people can look to Ukraine to learn what it means to be a leader. Zelenskyy has inspired  Ukraine—inspired the world—in his bold stance against Russian aggression. If young people observe his leadership style, the future will be in good hands.

Hannah Dilanchyan is a senior journalism major who loves visiting surf shops, eating baklava, and learning about World War II history. [email protected] Born and raised in beautiful Orange County, CA, I could not imagine living somewhere that isn’t sunny.  As a senior visual media journalism student, I absolutely love photography, writing, and talking with people. I spend most of my free time outdoors, either at my favorite beach, on a short, local hiking trail, or reading in my own backyard. I also love finding unique local spots to visit, from surf shops to bakeries - let me know if you have any recommendations!  My passion for journalism started young. As a kid, I would make homemade “newspapers” for my parents, often writing about the news and weather around the house. Then I began following political, local, and global news. I started by following the news in Armenia, where my parents were born, and from there it blossomed into a love for people, travel, food and culture.  I am beyond thankful to live in a country where we can practice the art of journalism without fear or danger. I love being a part of the Biola community - being able to get a higher education while focused on the Lord is something I am so thankful for.  I can’t wait to use my skills in the craft of storytelling for God’s glory here at Biola and even in the post-grad life.
