Softball played back-to-back games against Concordia University Irvine on March 10 in Irvine, California and lost their first game 4-5 and their second 0-5.

CLOSE, BUT NOT QUITE

The Eagles aimed to give the Golden Eagles a run for their money. Sophomore outfielder Allie Beck scored the first run of the game at the top of the first inning. Junior outfielder Sicili Brittingham singled through to the right side allowing junior outfielder Jennifer Morinishi to score the second run of the game. At the bottom of the first, CUI scored a run, bringing the total to 2-1 Biola.

The second inning saw no runs scored for either team. Bottom of the third, CUI scored three more runs, pushing them ahead of Biola 2-4. The Eagles retaliated with sophomore catcher Brie Nowak and sophomore outfielder Maddie Riley scoring runs, tying up the game top of the fourth. The scores stayed tied for the remaining five innings.

The Eagles, fighting to win, pushed the first game into the 10th inning before losing to the Golden Eagles when their free base runner scored in the international tiebreaker 4-5.

NOT ENOUGH

For the second game of their double header, Biola was unable to score any runs. The first inning went scoreless, but CUI quickly jumped on the leaderboard with a score of one run at the bottom of the second. They scored three runs the following inning, none the fourth and scored their final run in the fifth inning. Once again, the Eagles were defeated, 21-0.

Softball (10-9 overall, conference 5-5) is staying home to face off against Azusa Pacific University on March 19 at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. Footage and stats from the game are located on the Biola Athletics website.

Charlotte McKinley is a senior Journalism and Public Relations major who loves the Ultimate Fighting Championship, Stewart Hall, and the oxford comma (unfortunately). Whenever I tell people I’m from Spokane Valley, WA, they inevitably ask me how far from Seattle I am, so I’ll cut to the chase: I’m closer to Montana than I am to Seattle, and no, I don’t go to Seattle regularly. The PNW will always be my home, no matter where I go. I’ve been involved with the Mixed Martial Arts and Jiu Jitsu community for nine years now and am looking forward to making my career writing for the MMA and BJJ community after I graduate from Biola with my degrees in Journalism and Public Relations. If you’ve been with me in class, you know that all of my class projects tend to revolve around the Ultimate Fighting Championship and that community. My favorite thing about being a journalist is that I get to write people’s stories and tell it to people who wouldn’t have known about it otherwise. Interviewing people and hearing their story is a real honor, so the responsibility to accurately tell their story to others is a heavy one, but a privilege to bear.
