Women’s basketball played against the Chaminade University of Honolulu and won, 81-45. Early on, Biola took advantage of Chaminade’s mistakes, scoring eight points off turnovers and 18 points in the paint for the first half of the game. The Eagles maintained their lead throughout the night, taking a 9-0 lead in the first quarter and turning it into a 33-point advantage within the third quarter. 

WIDENING THE GAP

The Eagles’ defense was aggressive, leaving the Silverswords unable to decrease the deficit. Despite playing a high scoring game, the Eagles maintained a medium percentage game. They were 62.5% effective with their free throws, but only 38.7% effective with their 3-point shots and 47% effective with their field goals. 

Biola scored a total of 21 points off turnovers, compared to Chaminade’s nine. The Eagles had 32 points from both the bench and in the paint. The Silverswords only scored 18 bench points and 20 points in the paint. Biola had 10 second chance points compared to Chaminade’s six. The Eagles also had a total of 12 fast break points over the Silverswords’ five fast break points.  

BIOLA CAPITALIZES ON CHAMINADE’S MISTAKES

Freshman guard Amiah Simmons came out hot, scoring the first points of the game in under a minute. She went on to score 18 points for Biola throughout the game, the second-highest individual scorer of the night behind Chaminade’s Michaella Dean. The Silverswords scored their first points with five minutes left in the first quarter.

Both universities scored eight points in the second quarter, but Biola asserted its dominance with 24 points in the third quarter. The heat turned up in this quarter with Biola scoring 38 points. Sophomore forward Jordan Rab, freshman guard Laila Walker and Simmons all pushed the pace, hounding after the ball. 

Chaminade scored highest in the fourth quarter at only 15 points compared to Biola’s 18. The Eagles managed to score four 3-pointers, two layups and a jump shot. Though Biola only scored three points higher than Chaminade this quarter, the Eagles asserted their dominance and took home the win.

Women’s basketball (11-6 overall, 7-3 conference), will be staying home to face off against the University of Hawaii at Hilo in the Chase Gymnasium on Jan. 29 at 5:30 p.m. Footage and stats from the game are located on the Biola Athletics website.
