Women’s water polo defeated by UC Santa Barbara

The Eagles fall short to the Gauchos, 13-7.

Women’s water polo played their first home game of the spring semester at Splash Aquatic Center against the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos and lost, 13-7. 

BIOLA LEADS FIRST QUARTER

Freshman attacker Veralie Naranjo, assisted by freshman utility Lizzy Birch, scored the first goal seven minutes in. USCB quickly countered with a penalty shot. Before the end of the quarter, each team added another goal to the scoreboard. With under a minute left on the clock, Naranjo scored again, pulling the Eagles ahead.

UCSB TAKES THE LEAD AND VICTORY

In the second quarter, UCSB scored three goals against the Eagles for a halftime score of 5-3. Biola shot for the goal four times but proved no match for the UCSB goalie. UCSB scored four more times in the third quarter. Biola responded with three goals—two from Gonzales and one from sophomore attacker Kourtney Pyle for a third quarter score of 9-6, UCSB.

 In the final quarter, the Gauchos won out by outscoring the Eagles, bringing the total to a UCSB-decisive victory of 13-7.

Women’s water polo (1-2), will head over to Riverside, California to face off against UC San Diego and the University of Redlands on Jan. 29 at 9:15 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. respectively. Footage and stats from the game are located on the Biola Athletics website.

If you’ve been with me in class, you know that all of my class projects tend to revolve around the Ultimate Fighting Championship and that community. My favorite thing about being a journalist is that I get to write people’s stories and tell it to people who wouldn’t have known about it otherwise. Interviewing people and hearing their story is a real honor, so the responsibility to accurately tell their story to others is a heavy one, but a privilege to bear.
