Crime Log―Oct. 18–Nov. 2

This crime log features cases of extortion and theft, as well as a fire alert.

Petty Theft  — Lot K

Reported Oct. 19 at 4:01 p.m. The incident occurred between Oct. 8 and Oct. 9.

A student reported that property was taken from the parking structure outside Alpha Hall. The case was forwarded to the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department and remains active.

Obscene or Threatening Phone Calls — Horton Hall

Reported Oct. 25 at 4:24 p.m., occurred prior.

A student living in Horton Hall received threatening text messages. Campus Safety confirmed that the text messages contributed to an extortion scam. The investigation is ongoing.

Fire: Accidental Cause — Li Apartments

Reported Oct. 25 at 5:04 p.m.

Campus Safety received an alert about a fire in the Li Apartments when a smoke detector went off while a student was cooking. The case was cleared with no necessary follow-up.

Attempted Petty Theft  — Lot D

Reported Oct. 26 at 4:19 p.m., occurred prior.

A student reported an attempted theft in Lot D. No items were stolen, and Campus Safety determined that the attempted theft was a prank by the student’s friend. No crime occurred and the case has been cleared.
