SGA Rundown: Supporting commuters and Biola community

The Student Government Association discussed supporting commuters and community events on campus. This week senators considered the possibility of allowing commuter students to fill out an application to secure a parking space.

COMMUTER PARKING PLAN

Under this plan, students who travel more than 45 minutes to campus would have priority parking. The committee proposed setting aside 10 parking spaces per lot in Lots A, B and C.

Senators considered encouraging on-campus students to park in the garage rather than in the lots next to dorms in order to free up additional parking spaces for commuters. Ideas to simplify the process included adding a section for parking to the Campus Security app, in which students clock in and out of their parking spaces after two hours.

HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH

Senators examined how to serve Latino Biolans during Hispanic Heritage Month. SGA discussed Hermanos and BELLA, which are Biola affinity groups for Latino men and women. Senators recapped Fiesta Latina, a university event which celebrates Latin American culture.

SGA HOUR

Senators discussed changes to SGA Hour. Senators have consolidated resources into two tables, one for north campus outside the Student Union Building and the other for south campus outside the Hope basketball courts. SGA Hour is typically outside dorms from 9-10 p.m. after Singspiration but times have changed to 7:45-8:45 p.m. and 8:45-10:45 p.m.

Hannah Larson, Editor-in-Chief
Hannah Larson is a junior journalism major who loves novels, California redwoods and strawberry smoothies. I was born and raised in San Marcos, a small town in southern California where horses graze in fenced pastures and fields of sunflowers burst into bloom every spring. As much as I love SoCal, there is something special about taking a road trip to see the redwoods up north—you just can’t beat camping along the gorgeous Pacific coast.  I started writing for my high school paper when I was a junior and discovered a passion for reporting local news and crafting feature pieces, which drove me to pursue journalism in college. I took a staff writer position with the Chimes news section my sophomore year at Biola and loved seeing an article come together from initial interviews to final edits. The following semester, I joined the team as a news editor and dove into a new world of tight deadlines and investigative research. I look forward to leading The Chimes this year as we move into a new season of print media.
