On a rainy Thursday evening, women’s basketball returned home to Chase Gymnasium and kicked off their PacWest conference schedule with a win against Notre Dame De Namur University on Thursday. The Eagles took an early lead and never looked back, taking a 74-40 victory.

In the opening of the game, the Eagles took the lead with a jumper by sophomore forward Jazz Benn. Biola built a huge lead over NDNU and grabbed 14 rebounds to bring the score to 22-12. Throughout the second quarter, the Eagles continued to score and worked hard on defense by only allowing NDNU to score six points, going into halftime leading 37-18.

The Eagles flew with 11 points from the bench and forced 11 turnovers in the third quarter alone. Biola also tallied 23 points, which proved their highest amount of points in the quarter alone, bringing the score to 60-28. At 4:16 of the fourth quarter, the Eagles pushed their largest lead of 41 points with a final three-point shot by junior guard Brenna Khaw, and the game ended with a final score of 74-40.

Junior guard Tatum Brimley led Biola to their first PacWest victory with 14 points.

“It went exactly how we wanted it to go. I think we should’ve beat that team by as much as we beat them by,” Brimley said. “My energy helps the team defensively and if I’m doing well on offense, I’m probably doing well on defense.”

Overall, the Eagles played fantastic in their conference opener. Biola notched 28 points in the paint and forced 29 turnovers throughout the game. Junior forward Mikayla Greens recorded 11 rebounds. Freshman guard Aysia Johnson and Khaw each grabbed three assists.

Coach Alan Nakamura reflected on the first conference win.

“After a really challenging nonconference schedule, the team was really excited to get that with play underway,” Nakamura said. “I was really excited to see how we really played like a team. On defense everybody was helping each other, they were talking, they rebounded as a team.”

With the win, the Eagles move to 1-0 in conference and 3-4 overall. They continue play at home against Holy Names University on Saturday at 1 p.m.

She enjoys writing, playing sports, watching movies, traveling, shopping and spending time with friends and family. After traveling from Auburn, Washington which is about 40 minutes south of Seattle, to Biola University, I declared to major in journalism with an emphasis in broadcast. I came to Biola University with a strong passion for being involved in activities on campus that would demonstrate my artistic and writing abilities. The Chimes caught my eye the first semester of my freshman year and I decided to work with the staff as a freelance sports writer. I enjoyed attending the games, interviewing the coaches and players and writing game recaps. The next semester, I applied for the sports staff writer position and was accepted, which strengthened my writing drastically. During my sophomore and junior year, I worked as a Web Editor and innovated the Chimes website and social media pages. This year, I am stepping into the Copy Editor position and I aim to continue working towards my goal of being a broadcast journalist by reporting stories and challenging myself to learn more about AP Style. I will also continue to write for the sports section to strengthen my writing even more. I’m so glad to be a part of the staff and I’m excited for what’s to come next.
