WEB ONLY: Biolans who give a tweet

Students and profs alike have caught onto the rage that is Twitter. Here is a look at a few of them.

Many Biolans are diving headfirst into social networking.

The Café is now on Twitter, posting menus, updates, coupons and more. Some professors even require their students to tweet for class assignments.

“Twitter affords a way for students to interact with class material, each other and myself on a non-formal basis,” said Jeff Volkmer, professor of Old Testament history, who requires his students to post at least one tweet after each class. “What’s more is that we can share with each other ‘life,’ and it is my conviction that learning happens best in community.”

Here are some other Biola Tweeters:

OHatBIOLA

Here, students post things they’ve heard on and around campus: bits of conversations, inside jokes, and other random comments meant to entertain other Biolans.

Here’s an example of one such tweet:

“RT @inte11igentsia #OHatBiola : “Welcome to Common Grounds, we make a party in your mouth. – Common Grounds worker.”

Michael McClain

Michael McClain is a sophomore humanities major emphasizing philosophy. Michael twitters nearly twice a day as “michael_mcclain.” McClain said he tweets the usual updates to amuse his friends. He also uses it to update parents on college life.

Michael got a Twitter to follow his favorite musician, Derek Webb.

“There’s something about twitter that gives you the illusion that you know these famous people,” McClain said.

One of his recent tweets was: “Dear Descartes: I think, therefore my brain is fried and I can no longer think. Thus, I no longer exist. Way to go.”

Professor Mathew Weathers

When his students began asking to follow his Twitter, mathematics professor Mathew Weathers had to get one. He soon became yet another teacher on campus deeply involved in tweeting. He says he has been tweeting almost every day since the beginning of this year and loves it.

Unlike Professor Volkner, Mathew Weathers decided against making his class get a Twitter primarily because it, “might dilute the official way to get information [such as blackboard]…and it [Twitter] isn’t a very secure site. Anyone can see your updates.”
