• Nobody knows the true story behind St. Valentine because there are at least three different saints named “Valentine” recognized by the Roman Catholic Church.

• Love matches were conducted during a fertility festival in mid-February during Roman times.

• One legend claims St. Valentine secretly married couples against the laws of an emperor who banned marriage. The ban was because the emperor believed single men made efficient soldiers.

• Pope Gelasius declared Feb. 14 Saint Valentine’s Day in the fifth century.

• The oldest known Valentine card was documented in the 1400s, when Charles, duke of Orleans, sent it to his wife during his imprisonment in the Tower of London.

• Our current tradition of trading love letters on Feb. 14 became popular in England during the 17th century.

• Richard Cadbury introduced the first box of chocolates ever in 1868. He is also credited for introducing the first box of Valentine’s Day candy box.

• “Vinegar Valentines,” which carried nasty messages instead of sweet words, were especially popular in the 19th century and were sent anonymously on Valentine’s Day.

• “Be Mine,” one of the original messages on the Necco’s Sweethearts candies, still appears yearly. Recent additions include “Go Girl” and “IM Me.”
