Dorm of the week: Alpha Chi

You might identify Alpha Chi – located between Sigma Chi and Horton Hall, across from Emerson Hall – by its flurry of activity and high-pitched girlish squeals, but this lively dorm has its benefits. Built in 1966, Alpha Chi is a female-only dorm that is home to many underclassmen as well as upperclassmen.
Alpha Chi is changing from the only all-girl dorm on Biola's campus to co-ed housing.

You might identify Alpha Chi – located between Sigma Chi and Horton Hall, across from Emerson Hall – by its flurry of activity and high-pitched girlish squeals, but this lively dorm has its benefits. • Two Sets of Rooms: There are both doubles and triples in Alpha Chi. While some rooms have built-in closets and drawers, others have furniture provided in all the rooms (such as a dresser, desk and drawer). Triples usually do not have built-in closets. The double rooms are usually spacious, but former residents say a large number of triples can be found in Alpha Chi. Two bathrooms and two laundry rooms are located on each hall.

  • Close Community: Due to all the estrogen in one building – Alpha Chi can hold up to 300 people with its three floors – the girls are usually really close. A former resident shared that most of the girls living in Alpha Chi are underclassmen: “It seemed that almost 80 percent were freshmen,” she said.

  • Unique Features: Alpha Chi has a sun deck that many people don’t know about where girls can go and sunbathe even during the post-summer months (sorry, no guys allowed). Residents can also enjoy large lobbies with ample space for relaxing or doing homework.

  • Possible Precautions: Alpha Chi is one of the older dorm buildings, so many students prefer to live in Horton Hall or Hope Hall. Also, if you are an upperclassmen and don’t like to be surrounded by a large number of incoming freshmen girls, Alpha Chi might not be the perfect fit for you.
