The sounds of a proud Mexican culture shocked my ears as I entered the door. Four jolly men in embellished uniforms carrying oversized instruments brought the attractive sounds of mariachi to the attentive customers. El Taco Mexicano is a hidden cultural experience, not even five minutes away from the Biola campus. It has a refreshing and welcoming family feel, which is especially important to so many of us who are displaced from our actual homes.
This eatery is family owned. Not all, but most employees are from one delightful nest. Jesús Jr., the owner, seated my two friends and I, pulling out our chairs and ensuring our comfort. The service was remarkably prompt and every different face that greeted us wore a smile. This restaurant, going on its fourth birthday at its present location, proved to be a haven for people of all ages as I observed a little girl dancing around the aisles rearranging furniture and obviously basking in the thrill of live music.
The food was an experience alone. Their most popular dishes are the Chili Relleno, Super Burrito, and for those who are prepared to spend just a little more, the Fajitas on a sizzling hot plate. I enjoyed the carne asada Super Burrito, wet. For a small extra fee, entrées can be ordered “wet” which entails ranchera sauce and cheese smothering the plate. The burrito was of a huge portion, even larger than those of the infamous Chipotle, and for a reasonable price. My dish was $5.50 plus $1.50 for the added sauces. Those of you who find this too expensive, let me tell you that half of this enormous burrito is sitting in my dorm refrigerator waiting to reacquaint itself with me tomorrow around lunchtime. Delicious corn tortilla chips – homemade fresh daily – and salsa precede every meal.
The food and atmosphere are of an equally enjoyable caliber. It may not appear to be much on the outside, but inside the environment is clean, authentic and hospitable. The mariachi band, playing Friday nights from 6:00 to 9:30, took such requests as “It’s a Small World,” “Jingle Bells” and “De Colores.” The walls are decked with hand-painted scenes and festive photographs.
When talking with Jesús, he even mentioned his interest in giving Biola students a daily discount on their meals. This place could not be any better suited for college life! Great, inexpensive food, big portions, a fun and culturally enriching atmosphere, and a remarkably close location make El Taco Mexicano the perfect place for Biola students.
El Taco Mexicano is located at 12810 La Mirada Blvd.
