Senators discussed several internal proposals, LimeBikes and the Student Government Association’s marketing department, before voting on four internal proposals.

Vice president of community relations Lauren Peterson presented the goal of the marketing and communications department of SGA. Peterson discussed one of the main goals as making sure students know right away when a poster or social media post comes from SGA. Because of the new addition, Peterson explained the roles of her position, the marketing coordinator and visual brand manager. As a new endeavor, they plan to include monthly video updates on what SGA is working on.

Peterson also shared about a new program called SGA Gives to better reach the Biola and La Mirada community. Several of her ideas include: the SGA scholarship, random acts of kindness such as buying scantrons for students during finals week, a service day and fundraising for things like Hurricane Harvey.

Senators then discussed their constituents’ thoughts on the LimeBike. Several shared how international students could find the bikes helpful. However, most senators came with questions on how LimeBikes work, including how to make sure people do not steal the bikes and if specific docking stations must be installed. They also shared concerns about the usage of the bikes. Because Biola’s campus is so small the average bike ride remains far less than 30 minutes, which seems to be the smallest amount of time the LimeBike can be rented for.

PROPOSALS

Vice president of administrative services Olivia Romo proposed for $293.25 to buy five square card tables and five black tablecloths. By having these items, SGA would no longer have to rent tables from event services or campus coordination for SGA Hour every week and would then have the opportunity to share the tables with each dorm.

Vice president of finance, technology and HR Keaton Kerr proposed for $200 to pay a remaining balance to the New York Times. The balance comes because of an increase in the newspaper’s price last semester.

VOTING

Senators voted to have a same day vote on Romo’s proposal and shared that the purchase would benefit future members of SGA and the student body. They passed the proposal in full with a vote of 11-0-0.

Kerr’s proposal also included a same day vote and was passed in the full amount with a vote of 11-0-0.

Peterson’s proposal on the visual brand manager hours passed in full with a vote of  9-2-0. The senators shared how their constituents believe the change will expand SGA’s branding well, but also their concerns with several of SGA’s design elements on Instagram.

After increasing the amount of her proposal to $500, senators passed in full senior vice president Ella Corey’s donut proposal with a vote of 11-0-0. Donuts will be at each SGA Hour after open proposals at the end of the month.
