Senators listen to two short proposals

SGA hears updates from administration, SGA members and open proposals.

Senators discussed the prioritization process, a new senate handbook and heard two open proposals.

Vice president of Student Development André Stephens and associate dean of Student Development Kevin Grant came to hear from senators how students reacted to the announcement of the prioritization process. The senators said most students knew nothing about it and professors did not share much about where their programs landed in the categories of maintain, phase out, substantive change, reduce or enhance. A few senators mentioned specific programs, including the Biola Dance Crew and the Cook School of Intercultural Studies, who shared some concerns about the future results of the process. Stephens and Grant also shared how administration will make decisions for the 2018-19 school year in late April through summer break.

Student Government Association president Jessica Snow and Hope South senator Sierra McCoy shared about a new senate handbook they have been working on. The three main sections include explaining the senator’s job, each position within SGA and general tips for senators, such as professionalism in emails to important people on campus. Each senator will write two to three sentences about their President’s Administrative Council partnerships and their dorm culture to add to the handbook.

For the last 10 minutes of the meeting senators wrote thank you notes to donors who gave to the campaign, “A Soul of Conviction, A Voice of Courage.”


Sophomore cinema and media arts major Sophia Nordell and senior cinema and media arts major Andrew Corl proposed for $2,000 for the Biola Film Festival. The festival will take place on May 6 in Mayers Auditorium with a screening of all the entries within the 18 categories. The proposed money would cover food, decor, advertising and event services fees. The event will cost $5 per person, which will fund the event in future years.

Junior public relations major Nick Mutch proposed for $3,554.64 for Student Orientation Services to give planners to all the freshmen and transfers in fall 2017. They plan to order 1,300 planners at the cost of $2.49 each. The proposed money would also cover shipping costs.
