In Saturday’s Golden State Athletic Conference opening matchup against San Diego Christian College, the women’s basketball team trailed the Hawks by 12-14 points the majority of the game. However, Biola was stout in the paint and converted the Hawks turnovers into critical points that, combined with the clutch play by sophomore guard DeMoria White, lifted the Eagles over their division foes 53-52 to complete their exciting comeback.

When Biola fell behind early on to the Hawks in the first half, it seemed the game would result in a 10-15 point loss until the midway point of the third quarter.

Halfway through the third, the Eagles buckled down on defense by preventing SCC from scoring for six minutes. The Hawks’ six minute stretch was filled with errant ball control and inaccurate shooting. The Eagles capitalized on the Hawks’ miscues, scoring 20 of their 53 points off their opponent’s mistakes.

The defensive stronghold allowed freshman forward Sarah Dougan to showcase her potential in front of many, piling up 10 points, limiting turnovers and standing tall in the paint. Dougan was all over the board in the last two minutes of the game as she put layup to cut their final deficit to one points.

On the Hawks final possession, Dougan blocked a shot and obtained the rebound while White took care of the rest. She perfectly timed her jumper, providing an epic win in San Diego Saturday night. The pick and roll between White and Dougan throughout the night was key to The Eagles’ GSAC opening win.

Biola’s next game will be home against Bethesda University Wednesday Dec. 9 at 5:30 p.m.
