Catch Me If You Can had its grand finale on Mar. 2 when sophomore nursing major Madeline Pefferle shot her remaining target, Kohl Herman to win the competition for the second year in a row.
Jenna Kubiak: How did the action go down?
Madeline Pefferle: What happened was this one girl texted my roommate asking if I was her roommate and where she could find me … we decided we were going to set him up by pretending to set me up. The whole day, I was wearing these blonde extensions because I heard this guy was kind of insanely good at getting people, so I was trying to not get recognized. I had the blonde thing on, and right when he ended up coming up, he totally recognized me right away. I saw him from a distance, so I just started following him, pretending I was on the phone, seeing what going to happen. He started walking faster, and he ended up walking to the parking lot of the business building. I kept following him, and he knew I was following him, so finally, he ended up walking towards the library, and that’s when all my friends were like, you just have to run. He saw and he started running and it was kind of like a big chase.
J.K.: What was your strategy?
M.P.: People tell me not to tell people what my strategy is, but honestly, there’s no strategy — I think the main key is patience. If you know where someone is going to be and you have to wait for them, you could be waiting hours. It gets determined if you really want to win and if you have the patience enough to win.
J.K.: Were there any crazy things you did during the week?
M.P.: I know I sat in Horton for like three hours waiting for someone to come down.
J.K.: Was Kohl a tough opponent for you?
M.P.: I didn’t think one of us was going to be able to get each other at all. I thought there was going to have be some split-the-prize or something because we’re both really good. All his friends were really loyal to him — no one would talk about his schedule and no one would give him up.
J.K.: Have you played Catch Me If You Can before?
M.P.: I won last year, actually. That was the main reason for me wanting to win again. I told myself that I wasn’t really going to try again this year because it’s a long week of waiting, that I don’t have a lot of patience going to win myself. The Monday of Catch Me If You Can week, I found out I didn’t get the RA position. That time of feeling like I didn’t get something, I have to get something, that’s what really made me decide to want to try again. I had already signed up and I knew who my first target was. Basically, being able to know that I could have a two-peat was really cool.
J.K.: How does it feel to win for the second year in a row?
M.P.: It’s really cool because I got two Universal passes. I’m going to share it with my friends — I’m going to give a pass to one of my friends and we’re all going to split the other pass with my other friends who helped me out a lot.
J.K.: What’s one of your favorite memories from this year?
M.P.: I think one of my favorite memories was my friends and I were so determined to disguise me from this Kohl guy because we knew he had so much on me that we went shopping. I got a new hat, I put on these blonde extensions — I was wearing blonde hair for a whole an entire day. I felt like a whole different person. People weren’t recognizing me — some were, and then I’d have to explain why I was wearing it. It was fun, and I even had to go take a physiology test in my wig. I had a lot of support from girls on my floor … It felt like I was in some kind of action movie.
