This week’s senate meeting was open proposal day, when students outside of Associated Students are able to make proposals to the senate. There were nine proposals in total, four of which concerned funding student films.

BICYCLE REPAIR

First, the senate heard a proposal from Brett Kobold, a senior psychology major, on installing bicycle repair stands on campus. The stand will include repair tools and an air pump to enable students to maintain their bikes regularly. Kobold explained that the growing amount of bikes on campus calls for such an installment, and would enable students to get the most out of their bikes.

“You can easily get your money back if you maintain your bike,” Kobold said.

The effect would not be limited to students’ personal bikes, but would benefit classes and clubs that utilize bikes, Kobold said. The proposed amount for two bike repair stands is $2,808.

BIOLA FILM

Matthew Sugg, a junior film major, proposed that AS help fund the premiere of his film “Cicada,” Biola’s first feature-length film. The proposed premiere location is a theater in Los Angeles. The funding from AS would allow student ticket prices to be discounted from $12 to $5. The proposed amount is $2,000.

BLUFF BBQ

Ryan Dea, a Thompson resident advisor, proposed funding for a Bluff barbeque for the amount of $850. The amount would include the cost of food, supplies and entertainment. For the first time, the event will not be limited to Bluff residents, but will be open to the entire student body.

SENIOR THESIS FILM

Erika Pontius, a senior film major, proposed the funding of her film, “Siber.” Pontius proposed $2,000 to $3,000 to help fund some of the costs of post-production and the premiere. Pontius hopes to host the premiere in Sutherland Auditorium.

SUPER SMASH BROS. TOURNEY

Next, Scott Weir, a biblical and theological studies major, proposed a Super Smash Bros. tournament. The proposed funding is $200, which will be used for food and advertising. Weir hopes the event will take place in the Caf banquet room.

“There is a vast community of people who play,” Weir said.

CANDYLAND

Alpha senator Brandy Garcia proposed the funding of Alpha’s annual Candyland event for the amount of $700. This is less than what has been proposed for Candyland in the past due to partial funding from ResLife.

MUSEUM TRIP

Ian Ralph, a political science major, and Evan McGee, a junior business administration major, proposed funding to take a group of students to the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles. They amount requested is $438, which will cover the cost of ticket prices and advertising for the opportunity.

SENIOR THESIS FILM

Paul Maertens, a Biola graduate, proposed the funding of the premiere of his film, “The Last Raptor,” for the amount of $3,199.95.

STUDENT FILM

Melissa McAllister, a junior cinema and media arts major, proposed the funding of the post-production and premiere of her film, “The Story I Heard.” The amount requested is $875.

All proposals will be voted on at next week’s meeting. There was not a new finance update this week since no proposals had been passed.
