Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department arrested a man caught wandering near University Drive on suspicion of possession of stolen sheriff property on Wednesday night. The ordeal was resolved just before 2 a.m.

Campus Safety officers approached the man they noticed walking around the parking lot at 11:11 p.m. The patrolling officers thought that it was strange for someone to be walking about the parking lots so late at night, John Ojeisekhoba, chief of Campus Safety, said.

LASD was notified and the responding officers searched the suspect. Among his possessions, the Sheriff’s Department officers found a medallion, described by Ojeisekhoba as one that only a sheriff would have. Officers arrested the man for possessing stolen property. Further investigation will be handled by LASD.

The Campus Safety officers who first approached the man likely prevented a crime from happening on campus, Ojeisekhoba said.

“We believe he came here to commit crimes … [that] he had negative deeds in mind,” he added.
