With all of the dramas currently ruling the box office, it was a nice change to sit down and watch a ridiculous movie. Supposedly this film was made for children, but in reality, it is made for adults with a junior high boy’s sense of humor. “Gnomeo and Juliet” managed to be entertaining, heartwarming and downright ridiculous at points.
Shakespeare meets gnome
“Gnomeo and Juliet” mimics Shakespeare’s famous and beloved romance about two lovers that were destined for failure. Gnomeo is a Blue garden gnome and Juliet is a Red –– by nature (or color, in this case), they are sworn enemies. Their families have been pranking each other for years, and the war between the garden gnomes is never-ending. Gnomeo is determined to outshine the Reds by spray-painting their garden, and likewise, Juliet is determined to outshine the Blues by growing the most beautiful garden. The two eventually meet, fall in love and have to fight against their families to stay together. Will true love win, or will fate take its course? You’ll have to see the movie to find out.
“Gnomeo and Juliet” follows Shakespeare’s storyline pretty accurately, while taking artistic liberty to induce childish antics in between, as well as spicing up the comedic moments to entice adults.
Voicing impresses
The voices of the movie were phenomenal, as most of the main characters, and even most of the supporting characters, were famous stars with very believable voices. James McAvoy (“Atonement,” “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe”) and Emily Blunt (“The Devil Wears Prada”) played the title characters, while Michael Caine (“Batman Begins,” “The Dark Knight,” “The Dark Knight Rises”), Maggie Smith (“Sister Act,” “Harry Potter”), Jason Statham (“The Transporter,” “The Mechanic”), Ozzy Osbourne, Patrick Stewart (“X-Men,” “Star Trek”), Julie Walters (“Harry Potter,” “Mama Mia”), Dolly Parton and Hulk Hogan had some amazing supporting roles and cameos.
Film delivers with humor
With garden gnomes waging outright war on each other, racing lawnmowers down alleyways, going on missions and pulling prank after prank, the younger audiences –– as well as those with a certain sense of humor –– will be laughing throughout the movie. The movie’s renditions of Elton John songs were hysterical, and had the kids around me dancing and giggling by the end of the movie. With decent action, an entertaining storyline and awesome comedic moments, “Gnomeo and Juliet” is great fun.
Although this movie is worth seeing, I can’t say that it is worth spending 11 dollars on. I recommend waiting for the dollar theatre. It shouldn’t take long, since new movies are coming out for the next few weeks, and usually the kid movies get the boot first.
