Popcorn: from buttery to better

Spice up your evening snack with these gourmet popcorn recipes.

Jessica’s Recipes

Nutritional Yeast Popcorn:

Use 2 tablespoons of olive oil to pop ½ cup popcorn in a big pot, and then add a handful of nutritional yeast flakes. If you are having trouble making the flakes stick, sprinkle something liquid — such as butter — over the popcorn before adding the flakes.

Nutritional yeast is a great source of vitamin B and protein, and has a nutty, cheesy flavor. It is a great alternative to cheese for those who are lactose intolerant or vegan.

Salt and Vinegar Popcorn:

Use 2 tablespoons of olive oil to pop ½ cup popcorn in a big pot, and then gently sprinkle apple cider vinegar over your popcorn. Toss it with salt, to taste.

Arugula Peppered Popcorn:

Preheat the oven to 315 degrees. Take 1 to 2 cups of leafy green arugula, and toss with 1 teaspoon olive oil. Spread out on a baking sheet, sprinkle with pepper and a little salt, and bake for 10 minutes.

While you wait, use 2 tablespoons of olive oil to pop ½ cup popcorn in a big pot. Remove the arugula from oven, and without burning yourself put all your little arugula chips into a bowl. Crunch them up with your hands, then, toss your popcorn and the arugula together, and sprinkle pepper on top. Now, enjoy your savory treat!

Curried Popcorn:

Use 2 tablespoons of olive oil to pop ½ cup popcorn in a big pot, and then toss it with 2 chopped cloves of garlic, a few dashes of hot sauce, and 1 teaspoon of that curry powder you bought from Fresh and Easy last week for your stewed lentils.

Garlic Parmesan Popcorn:

Use 2 tablespoons of olive oil and 2 crushed cloves of garlic to pop ½ cup popcorn in a big pot, and then toss it with 1/3 cup grated parmesan, 1 clove minced garlic, a dash of cayenne pepper, and salt and pepper to taste.

Herbed Popcorn:

Use 2 tablespoons of olive oil to pop ½ cup popcorn in a big pot, and then toss it with coriander, cumin, oregano and whatever other herbs you want. I recommend about ½ teaspoon each, but you can do as little or as much as you prefer. These recipes are very flexible!

Garlic Ginger Sesame Popcorn:

Use 2 tablespoons of olive oil to pop ½ cup popcorn in a big pot, and then sprinkle 1 tablespoon of sesame oil over your fresh popcorn.

Next, toss it with ½ teaspoon of minced garlic or garlic powder, 1 teaspoon of minced ginger or ginger powder, 1 pinch cayenne pepper and salt to taste. Enjoy!
