I hope to work efficiently this year in an effort to expand beyond my original duties. The revenue from these ads account for the majority of Chimes’ budgeted money.
Matt is a sophomore, Business Marketing major living in Hope Hall. In his free time he enjoys playing guitar and piano, worshipping, listening to music, working out, long boarding, going to the beach, using his annual pass at Disneyland, and snowboarding in the winter. Elizabeth Sallie
Job: Managing Web Editor
Year: Sophomore
Major: Journalism
Office Hours: Tuesday, 2-3:30p
I’m the Managing Web Editor. That means I oversee the website and the different facets of it. The Chimes Online is unique from the print edition in that we’re able to offer you more multimedia. I have the fun job of creating innovative ways to do that, work with you and take what you want to see and make it into a reality. Our goal is to make stories engaging through photos, videos, interactivity, social media, and creative use of text in addition to working with the excellent print pieces from the Chimes.
I hail from the Old Dominion (Virginia.) I have two siblings and am a sophomore this year. My friends call me Sallie, and I generally dislike being called Liz. I collect rubber duckies, love to read, and think sweet tea is the greatest beverage of all time. I love seeing the online world and the newspaper collide to make one beautiful story, and am adding a Computer Science minor in order to learn even more.
Patricia Diaz
Job: Web Content Editor
Year: Sophomore
Major: Journalism
Hey there! I’m Patti, the Web Content Editor at the Chimes. At 5 foot ½ in. tall, I really couldn’t be more unlike the freakishly tall guy who had my job before me, but that’s really ok. This is a new year and I couldn’t be more excited to be on staff and for all that is ahead of us. As Web Content Editor, I am in charge of managing the content that is published on our website (which is everything that is printed in the weekly paper and more!) While I ask myself almost every day “what in the world did I get myself into?” I remind myself to give it all over to God because, ultimately, this is all for His glory (and I really wouldn’t make it without a healthy dose of divine help!)
We’re dreaming big for the web this year, as that’s really where it’s at for the future of journalism.
With print newspapers going out of business and out of style, the internet has suddenly become the primary venue for news, though the industry is still scrambling to figure out exactly what that means. This year, we are striving to make the Chimes Online TIMELY (in what we post), RELEVANT (news that relates to you), and INNOVATIVE (in our delivery). We view our website as a place that is not only in touch with campus happenings, but helps build Biola’s community as well. The road to these goals may be long and change often comes about in a million small ways, but we are determined to see it happen. And, of course, we welcome your comments and feedback on this process. So keep checking back to see what we’re up to and let us know what you think!
Harmony Wheeler
Job: News Editor
Year: Senior
Major: Journalism
Office Hours: Tuesdays 3:00-6:00 pm
As the news editor, I am responsible for the stories and layout on the first three pages of The Chimes. It is my goal to inform the Biola community in an interesting and captivating way. That includes reaching out to Biola students and faculty to find out what they want to read about. The news section covers what some may consider the usual, boring events on campus, but it also covers exciting things happening on and off campus from local news to national crises. It is about keeping the community updated and connected.
Super senior Harmony Wheeler started writing for The Chimes last year after transferring to Biola from Taylor University Fort Wayne, Indiana. She has experience writing for news, features, and public relations and has written for The Modesto Bee, Christian Communicator and Church Libraries magazines, the TUFW Express student newspaper and Alumnus magazine, StaticMultimedia.com and ChristianBookPreviews.com.
Wheeler’s hobbies include listening to movie scores, attending Broadway shows and operas, writing, and taking photos. She is actively involved in social media and public relations/marketing, and she writes regularly on her own blogs.
Tiffany Sun
Job: Features Editor
Year: Senior
Major: Journalism
Office Hours: Mondays, 10:30 am-1:30 pm
As Features Editor, it’s my job to oversee the pages that constitute the Lens section of the Chimes. My interests range from music to seeing complex ideas conveyed in a lucid manner, and hope that will be evident in this section. My goal in features is to be tuned in with the voices on campus, especially the marginalized, that their thoughts and concerns may be communicated to all.
Nathan Palatsky
Job: Sports Editor
Year: Senior
Major: English
Office Hours: Monday 11:30-3pm
I’m a senior English major, with a writing emphasis. I love sports and writing, hate Shakespeare, Jane Austen and the Boston Red Sox. I grew in Southern California, except for 2 years spent planting churches in Russia with my parents. I am an only child. I like the Yankees, Broncos, and USC football. My job at the Chimes as the sports editor is to preview, edit, and format articles for the printed Chimes, as well as working with the web folks to update the sports content of the Chimes Online and the Chimes on Twitter. I also supervise a staff of writers who cover sports related events at Biola and elsewhere.
Jeff Koch
Job: Opinions Editor
Year: Sophomore
Major: Journalism
Office Hours: Monday 10:30-11:30 am, Wednesday 9:30-11:30 am
My name is Jeff. I’m a new-ish transplant to Southern California, but I was actually born out here, so I’m technically a native. Now I live happily in Sigma Chi (and likely will for all 4 years – love it there) and attend Pomona First Baptist, with my grandparents. It’s a bit of a drive, and firmly into APU territory, but I consider it spying on the enemy. Also it’s a great church. I love music, video games, popcorn, fried chicken and not doing homework or anything productive.
As opinions editor, it is my job to wrangle up the feisty, wild opinions writers, break them and tame them. Through a steady diet of natural grasses and grains, along with the occasional sugar cube and plenty of exercise, they provide me with articles which offer detailed, satirical and socio-political commentary. These majestic creatures have as much to teach us about ourselves as they do about the world we all share.
Callie Miller
Job: Senior Copy Editor
Year: Senior
Major: English
Office Hours: Tuesday 4:30-6:00 pm Wednesday 6:30-8:00 pm
I’m Callie Miller and I’m Copy Editor for the Chimes. My job is basically to read through everything before it goes to print and make corrections to the spelling, grammar, or content. I love getting a chance to read every article– it’s a great way to stay connected with Biola’s community.
About me: I’m a senior English Writing major here at Biola. I love to read and
write, which is why I’m so excited to be working for the Chimes! My favorite books are modern/postmodern American Lit, and I like to write short stories in my free time. I’m from a town in Northern California, which I love because leaves actually turn colors in the fall. I also like Dr. Pepper, the color yellow, power outages, and Gilmore Girls, and rainy days. That’s me!

Amanda Warner
Job: Assistant Copy Editor
Year: Junior
Major: Journalism
Office Hours: Tuesday 12:00-2:00 pm Wednesday 6:00-7:00 pm
My name is Amanda and I am from Riverside, California. I am a junior majoring in journalism. I have been involved in journalism since I joined my high school newspaper as a sophomore knowing absolutely nothing about reporting. I still love it after all these years. It’s interesting what questions you get to ask people during an interview 🙂 I’ve also really come to love writing. That is partly why I wanted to try out for the copy editing position. I wanted to sharpen my writing skills and really hammer the AP Stylebook into my head. So I am very excited about this year. My job as assistant copy editor is to read through all of the stories making sure they are factual and as mistake-free as possible. I am excited for my job this year because I’m going to get to know The Chimes staff and be completely up-to-date with everything that is happening at Biola. Any questions about anything feel free to contact me!
