The best part of Halloween is that the more creative you are, the better you will look. If you aren’t that creative, get a friend to help you out. Or go with a friend as a couple from something. Barbie and Ken, Romy and Michelle, Bonnie and Clyde, Bert and Ernie, The Stooges, Nerds … the possibilities are endless. Halloween is one of the best times of the year for you to flex your creative muscle, so don’t get stuck wearing something we’ve all seen.
There is no shortage of smart and witty costumes. The key is having fun with it. As a couple, come up with something smart and light-hearted, like the “peace and quiet” combo — one of you go as a mime, the other as a hippie. It’s simple, but funny.
Dress up like a Lego with a group of friends and run around stacking on top of each other.
Be a chipmunk. A “chip” “monk.” Throw a brown sheet on, and cover it in bags of potato chips. Or try the serial killer approach, with boxes of cheerios punched up and knives stuck all over the body.
I have already seen one stellar costume this year. Its creativity is inspiring, exactly what I’d hope to see more of on the 31st. The deviled egg: a sunny side-up egg costume complete with horns and a red tail is perfectly acceptable for the holiday.
All I ask is that this season, you stay away from the typical. Anyone can run to CVS or a Halloween superstore and grab a scream mask. The scary demon thing is so third grade. And no cowboys please; we can do better than that.
I wouldn’t be upset if I saw a few standard sheet ghosts. Grab a white bed sheet, cut a few holes in the front, and go for it. It’s a Charlie Brown throwback, and it’s much appreciated.
Take pride in your Halloween costume. It will be a holiday to remember if you keep it creative and fun.
