Francis Chan returns for Torrey 2007

Just a week and a half before the event kicks off, Chapel Board today released the schedule for Torrey Conference 2007, and it includes a number of familiar faces.

Francis Chan, who most recently appeared in the 2005 conference, will reappear this year. Bryan Loritts, who also appeared in 2005, and author Jill Briscoe will be speaking during during multiple sessions. Todd Proctor, lead pastor of Rock Harbor Church, will be leading a worship concert on Wednesday, the opening night.

The schedule is a departure from last year’s lineup, which included the popular “Theology of Sex” series taught by Rock Harbor Teaching Pastor Mike Erre. Also, this year’s conference won’t feature Biola faculty at the pulpit, unlike last year’s, when professors Tim Muehlhoff and Erik Thoennes spoke.

Chaplain Ron Hafer said his office sought out ethnic, gender and age diversity. They also chose the speakers with Biola’s centennial in mind.

“We wanted some who had been here before,” Hafer said. “We wanted to connect the old with the new.”

That mission came through — Briscoe spoke in Biola chapels during the 70s and 80s, Loritts is a Talbot alum and Proctor is a Biola grad. And according to Hafer, Chan has visited so often that he might as well be a Biola grad.

Aside from the worship concert, Biola’s student worship teams will be leading music during the sessions.

Students are required to attend eight of the ten sessions offered.
