During the last senate meeting of the year, the Student Government Association welcomed Kate Marie Fitzpatrick and Bailey Giersch to discuss their roles as Peer Wellness Ambassadors. Senators also voted on a SCORR Conference proposal which passed and will include funding for Christian speaker and rapper Propaganda.

PEER WELLNESS AMBASSADORS

Fitzpatrick and Giersch explained they run huddles, blogs and workshops within different parts of campus. Their goal is to care for students throughout campus and they plan to implement one-on-one mentoring in the spring.

The team is currently working on surveying students in order to learn more about the community they serve. 

SCORR CONFERENCE 

Following SCORR Conference’s proposal two weeks ago, senators deliberated on funding the event. The major deciding factor was the conference’s wish to hire Propaganda, who has been vocal about his political beliefs online. Some senators voiced concerns that the rapper’s views may not line up with Biola’s. 

SGA vice president Gretchen Ferguson discussed a poll taken by Biolans on what their thoughts were regarding the proposal. The poll had 27 students participating, with 88.9% voting to pass the proposal in full, with 7.4% of votes denying the proposal and 4.7% voting to pass it partially. The poll was active in the cocurricular newsletter and senator newsletters.

The proposal was passed in full, with six senators voting in favor, while Commuter senator Andrew Herrera voted to deny the proposal in conjunction with Blackstone and Hope hall senators. Commuter senator Rudy Torres and Bluff senator Schylar Turpel abstained from voting.
