The Student Government Association met this Thursday afternoon via Zoom to discuss a new proposal to fund the annual SCORR Conference, speak with the Chief of Campus Safety, John Ojeisekhoba, and hear updates from Students We Serve. 

SCORR PROPOSAL

SGA heard from Katie Bean, the Media Relations Coordinator for SGA, about a proposal to fund this year’s SCORR Conference, which is to be held via livestream. It is estimated the conference will have an attendance of around 1,500 people. 

Bean proposed funding that would go towards the combination of art, performances and postage to send thank you cards to the attendees. Those expected to appear include a graffiti artist and Propaganda, a hip-hop artist and poet from Los Angeles. 

DISCUSSION WITH CHIEF OJEISEKHOBA 

Ojeisekhoba joined the SGA meeting to follow up on what the spring semester might look like according to Los Angeles County’s current condition in the coronavirus pandemic. 

Ojeisekhoba, who has seen the campus empty throughout the entirety of the pandemic, is part of the task force that corresponds with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health to work on reopening plans. Plans might look different, as L.A. County has reached nearly 5,000 coronavirus cases just today. 

“President Corey has done a lot of work behind the scenes to advocate to the state and county level,” Ojeisekhoba said. “We need to keep our words to our students, but we need to do some work behind the scenes.”

STUDENTS WE SERVE

SGA’s diversity coordinator, Debra Mlambo, contributed to the meeting to remind senators of Biola’s usual Thanksgiving traditions, such as Cafsgiving and the  Student Enrichment and  Intercultural Department’s Thanksgiving celebration. Although these events will not be taking place, some affinity groups, such as Taro Talk, will be holding a friendsgiving.
