The Eagles flew south to San Diego, California on Saturday, Sept. 28 to go head-to-head with Point Loma Nazarene University. The Sea Lions are the current PacWest conference champions, which made the 1-0 victory over PLNU that much sweeter.

DEFENSE TURNED TO OFFENSE

Biola started the game with energy on the offensive end. The Eagles put up two early shots on goal to no prevail. However, freshman forward midfielder Ella Hiveley kept the pressure alive on the Sea Lions with two shots on goal herself within the first half. Teammate senior goalkeeper Christina Rodriquez helped on defense, shutting out the only two shots on goal attempted by PLNU the entire first half.

Senior forward Sarah Yang found offensive gain as she put away the Eagles’ one and only goal of the night late in the first half, thanks to a series of assists from senior defender Alyssa Chavez and senior defender Colie Martin.

Half two provided the same high-intensity energy from the Eagles as half one. Locked in, Biola shut down the Sea Lions with their tight defense. PLNU attempted many shots on goal, but junior goalkeeper Briana Ruelas kept Biola’s lead alive, as the Eagles collectively brought down the conference champs, 1-0.

The Eagles (2-3-1) will hit the turf again on Oct. 2 at 4 p.m. as they face Concordia University, Irvine in a home matchup on Al Barbour Field.

Andi Basista is a senior journalism major who loves basketball, underground music and is highly appreciative of a good beach day. [email protected]  Originally from a small farm town in Ohio, I have put aside my corn shucking gloves to embrace a new life in the Angel City to study sports journalism. It is true what they say about culture shock and LA traffic. I am used to being late to work because of getting stuck behind a John Deere tractor, but now it is because of gridlock on the I5. However, I have quickly adjusted to the city life and haven’t looked back since. I moved from the midwest out to Los Angeles over two years ago. Since then my life has changed in big ways. I have learned the importance of pursuing my dreams in order to make them a reality. Sports have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. From the time I was able to stand up on my own, there was always a ball in my hand. Basketball quickly became my MO. I was involved in multiple athletic organizations, traveling on AAU teams and playing my way through my middle and high school league. My passion for the sport is what inspired me to pursue a career in sports journalism. Being at a place like Biola that has an abundance of opportunities has allowed me to expand from my small-town roots, and that is something I am truly thankful for.
