Men’s cross country end victorious in final invitational of season

Eagles earn several top 35 finishes and earn new personal records.

Men’s and women’s cross country competed in their final regular season meet at the California State University Fullerton Titan Invite in Fullerton, Calif. on Friday. The men won the invite over a field of nine teams and the women placed second out of five teams.

In the men’s 8k race, six Eagles finished within the top 35. Junior Gabe Plendcio continued his strong season, paving the way for the Eagles by finishing 10th, tallying a time of 24:57.96. Sophomore Angel Escobar finished 13th with a time of 25:30.52 and freshman Jared Donnel finished 31st in 26:05.84.

Three Eagles finished one after the other within a few seconds. Freshman Brady DeHaven placed 33rd in 26:07.63, senior Christian Perez finished 34th in 26:08.20 and sophomore Ryan St. Pierre finished 35th in 26:10.11. One Eagle earned a new personal best for the 8k race as senior Omar Ledezma recorded a time of 32:27.01.

The women took on the 5k race and five Eagles placed in the top 35. Sophomore Mackenna Mason led the way for the Eagles placing 10th recording a time of 18:20.15. Senior Emily Ransom placed 14th and grabbed a new personal record with a time of 18:30.79.

Freshman Clara Haynes finished 17th in 18:44.14. Sophomore Kaitlyn Natividad finished 27th in 19:02.09 and senior Kaili Waller finished 35th with a time of 19:25.65.

Two Eagles earned new personal best times in the 5k race. Ransom finished with an outstanding performance and junior Taylor Lawsen finished 70th and recorded a time of 20:33.16.

Both teams will compete in their second PacWest Conference Championship in Fresno, Calif. on Nov. 2 at 8 a.m.

After traveling from Auburn, Washington which is about 40 minutes south of Seattle, to Biola University, I declared to major in journalism with an emphasis in broadcast. The Chimes caught my eye the first semester of my freshman year and I decided to work with the staff as a freelance sports writer. I enjoyed attending the games, interviewing the coaches and players and writing game recaps. The next semester, I applied for the sports staff writer position and was accepted, which strengthened my writing drastically. During my sophomore and junior year, I worked as a Web Editor and innovated the Chimes website and social media pages. This year, I am stepping into the Copy Editor position and I aim to continue working towards my goal of being a broadcast journalist by reporting stories and challenging myself to learn more about AP Style. I will also continue to write for the sports section to strengthen my writing even more. I’m so glad to be a part of the staff and I’m excited for what’s to come next.
