DeMetropolis leads women’s soccer to overtime victory

Eagles push past Chaminade in big overtime win on the road.
Biola Women's Soccer

Biola women’s soccer traveled to take on Chaminade University of Honolulu Saturday night. The Eagles were looking to improve after a 1-1 tie in the rain against Hawaii Pacific University last Thursday night. Chaminade tied up the game 1-1 at the end of the second half, only for Biola to come up big with a winning goal in the final minutes of overtime.

Sophomore forward Madi DeMetropolis scored a brilliant shot in overtime on a breakaway from the middle of the field that was assisted by junior midfielder Hali Oakes. Junior goalkeeper Alyssa Joel led the defense, keeping Biola in the match with 6 saves, including one in overtime.

The Eagles struck first in the 47th minute with a shot to the top shelf by freshman midfielder Katelyn Penner. Pounding Chaminade with seven shots in the first half, the Eagles led 1-0 going into halftime.

Although Biola started the second half strong, recording two shots within two minutes, Chaminade’s Randi Fontes put a tough shot into the lower left hand corner past Joel to tie up the match 1-1. The intensity of the game continued but neither team pulled ahead and the match headed to overtime.

The action went back and forth as both teams put shots on goal. Joel recorded a strong save in the 92nd minute off a header from CU and Biola responded with a quick offensive transition. DeMetropolis then broke away from the midline to score her first goal of the season and give her team a 2-1 win.

The Eagles are now 4-0-1 in the PacWest conference and 6-3-3 overall. Biola will be back in action for their last game in Hawaii against Hawaii Hilo University on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

My name is Ashley Grams and I grew up in a small town north of Seattle –– it is so far north that many people resort to saying we live in Canada. Every weekend I watched sports with my dad, especially the Seattle Seahawks. Thursday, Sunday or Monday night, it didn't matter when they were on, my dad and I were glued to the TV. My love of sports started at a young age and translated into my teen years as I found myself following in the footsteps of Erin Andrews and other broadcasters. Sports journalism became my dream and I moved to Biola University, near Los Angeles, to pursue it. As a sophomore broadcast journalism major and Spanish minor, I am excited to continue writing for the Chimes as a sports staff writer. I enjoy the challenge of communicating effectively with a joyful heart, not to mention watching tons of games on campus! Outside of the Chimes you might find me playing intramural sports, watching “Friends” or eating gluten-free food.
