Christian artist Lauren Daigle’s sophomore album, “Look Up Child,” is blowing the music world away. Since its Sept. 7 release, the album has climbed its way to the top ten of Billboard’s Top 200 Albums, sneaking its way to No. 3. Surpassing big names such as Ariana Grande, Nicki Minaj and Cardi B, Daigle’s album sits at No. 9 on the Billboard charts this week.

Her album has had the best sales week for a Christian album since Casting Crowns’ “Until the Whole World Hears” in 2009. Her album remains No. 1 in its third week on Billboard’s Top Christian albums and hit single “You Say” is seeing its eleventh week as No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Christian songs. Daigle’s sophomore album is stirring the hearts of listeners everywhere.

WHAT STUDENTS ARE SAYING

“You can tell that she’s specifically talking to a broken audience,” said Donald Schaffer, sophomore cinema and media arts major.

Schaffer was stunned to hear that Daigle’s album has surpassed the spots of Billboard’s most notable artists. For Daigle’s latest album, he appreciates her straightforward approach to genuine heartbreak. Most Christian songs reflect the happiness of being on the mountaintop with God rather than the valley of pain and trials. Daigle’s honesty and authenticity is painfully familiar, allowing listeners to connect with her songs about life’s sorrows.

“It was beautiful,” said Anthony Santos, senior psychology major. “I loved it. There’s not a lot of music that talks about lamenting, but she does that in her album.”

A RECORD OF HOPE

“I want this to be such a record of joy, such a record of hope, that people experience a childlikeness again,” Daigle said in an interview with Billboard.

Listeners can expect songs that are upbeat, solemn and even reggae. However, through her differing styles throughout the album, Daigle manages to deliver the genuine message that we can always place our hope and trust in God. Take time to listen to this authentic album that has been consistently topping the charts.

I come to you from the city of San Jose, California, which is about one hour south of San Francisco (and has the best boba). I’ve always loved sports. I was always that girl that would rather be out playing basketball than going shopping or doing makeovers. I came into Biola as a kinesiology major with hopes of a career in sports medicine and sports training, but everything changed during the spring semester of my sophomore year. Though I still love athletics, I realized that there is something that I enjoy even more than that: storytelling. After two years as a kinesiology major, I decided to change my major to journalism.  Although I joined the Chimes party a little bit later than most, I’m thrilled to be on staff once again for my senior year at Biola. I love all kinds of music: reggae, R&B, 80’s, alternative—you name it! You can count on me to constantly be on the lookout for artists and bands that are on tour. That being said, I am so excited to be editing for the Arts and Entertainment section of the Chimes this year. When I’m not on the search for the next concert, I love going to coffee and tea shops, finding cute places to snap photos and eating Korean barbeque.
