After playing tough PacWest competitors this season, the Eagles looked to close out the final two games in strong fashion. They put up a rough battle against Chaminade University Swords on Feb. 17. This game proved frustrating for the Eagles as they fought hard but fell short in the end with their second loss of the week by a final score of 71-59.
EAGLES BEGIN GAME STRONG
The Eagles held an early lead in the opening of the first half after starting with a 7-0 run. They held this lead till 6:40, where the Swords led the Eagles after a 13-point run and moved the score to 25-16. The Eagles struggled to score near the end of the half. At halftime, the score stood at 30-20 in favor of Chaminade.
STRUGGLE TO NARROW THE SWORDS LEAD
In the second half, the Eagles fought to narrow the huge lead gap with the Swords. Both teams traded buckets and continued to have a 10-point gap for most of the half. At 13:27, the Eagles narrowed the Swords large lead to six points. However, the Swords grew their lead over the Eagles and the game ended with a final score of 71-59.
Junior guard Trevor Treinen scored 23 points and reflects on the Eagles season.
“I just think that we had a good season. We went through some adversity, but we battled and that’s all you can really ask for, especially with a short team,” Treinen said. “We had some injuries and that’s unfortunate but we are just kind of looking forward to next year.”
HAVE A GOOD SPIRIT
Head coach Dave Holmquist looks forward to the Eagles’ final home game.
“We weren’t as ready to play tonight as we have been in most recent games,” Holmquist said. “It will be our last game on thursday so I’m hoping that we will have a real good effort. We want to play hard and have a good spirit.”
Junior forward Alex Talma grabbed 11 rebounds, one block and two steals. Treinen recorded eight points from free throws and senior guard Blake Shannon Jr. made three assists.
Their loss moved them to 5-14 in the PacWest conference and they are currently 11th of 14 in the conference. The Eagles hope to win their final regular season game at home against Dixie State University on Feb. 22 at 7:30 p.m.
