Women’s golf starts spring season in San Diego

The Point Loma Nazarene University Reach Tournament, which took place in San Diego on Feb. 5-6, marked the beginning of the women’s golf spring 2018 season. After playing a total of 36 holes, the Eagles finished sixth out of 15. Their final score of 657 defeated both Hawaii Pacific and California Lutheranuniversities who tied for seventh with final scores of 671.

SLOW START

At the conclusion of the first 18 holes, Biola finished the day with a score of 334, putting them in seventh place. A first round score of 79 helped freshman Marcel Manalo tie for the fifteenth best individual score out of 80 players. Sophomore Jules Loibl followed close behind, ending the first round at 81. However, this did not come close to the impressive team performances by both Cal State San Marcos and California Baptist, who came in at 298 and 307, respectively.

COMEBACK PERFORMANCES NOT ENOUGH

On day two of the tournament, sophomore Tori Roeske and freshman Sophia Karnazes both turned around their first day scores of 87 and posted 79 and 81, respectively, in the second round.  Freshman Rachel Reynolds also improved from 87 to 85, while Manalo again led the team with a score of 79. The Eagles improved by 11 strokes in the second round, moving Biola into sixth place in the tournament. They finished 12 points behind University of Victoria, who came in fifth place.

The Eagles will have their next tournament in Riverside, Calif. on Feb. 26 as they play in the Cal Baptist Women’s Invitational.
