With time running out in a tie game on Feb. 3 against Azusa Pacific University, head men’s basketball coach Dave Holmquist put the ball in the hands of the most experienced player on the floor. Senior guard Blake Shannon Jr. took an inbound pass and got a favorable switch before stepping back and knocking down a three-pointer with 4.5 seconds remaining to give the Eagles their first win over APU in five years. Shannon Jr. scored a season-high 21 points in the dramatic upset and continued his strong play on Feb. 5 in an 84-64 win over Holy Names University. Even though he was held scoreless in the first half, Shannon Jr. found his teammates for a team-high five assists before stepping up after halftime. He nailed two three-pointers to start the second half and finished the game with nine points, as well as tying his season-high with 11 assists and grabbing four rebounds. All of Shannon Jr.’s 30 points during the two-game stretch came from three-pointers, going 10-18 behind the arc. He notched 14 assists and six rebounds in the same timeframe. The two games required different roles from Shannon Jr. as he switched from scorer to provider against vastly different opponents. The senior’s clutch play and integral part in two quality PacWest wins make him an easy choice for the Chimes Athlete of the Week.
